28 August 2008
Nearly four years ago, Marita Beth and I were "gifted" in the form of a very young puppy found wandering in our front yard. The next door neighbour had rung us up one morning at 0730 to find out if we had accidentally let our dog out. Of course, we had not, 'Tia was still sound asleep in her crate and we in our bed. This scrawny, little cross-eyed border collie puppy became a source of neighbourhood searching for the next few weeks. Our next door neighbour's kids put up signs, we contacted the Border Collie rescue society, the pound and the local pet stores. No one seemed to own or want this dog despite caring enough to put a very expensive shock collar on his neck sans tags. As TRF approached we tried harder but found no success. Eventually we had to make a choice: the pound, or the kennel? Since the pound wouldn't/couldn't guarantee he'd live through the weekend, we took him with 'Tia to the "pet hotel" (kennel) where we, obviously, had to get all of his shots and papers up-to-date. So, $300 later, that little Border Collie became Cormac and the newest member of the family.
During his travails as a solo pup scrounging for food, he picked up the habit of absolutely devouring his food in as quick a fashion as possible. In fact, he could put down an entire bowl of dry kibbles in less than 10 seconds. We did lots of research and found no effective way to curb this behaviour, and four years later we still can't slow him down. So, an old incomplete croquet set came to the rescue and in went three balls. The subject of my photo.

If you have any thoughts on how to slow down a dog that thinks he's ravenous and will never eat again, I'm all ears. Four years later it's just irritating and I wish he'd slow his eating. Five minutes after he's done, 'Tia will finally finish her meal and have a bit of water as a nice post-dinner relaxer. Cormac should learn from her.
Cheers.

28 August 2008

Only a couple of days left to get any real sewing done. So much to do, so little time.

Both Kelly and I have expressed some regret at the boxes of stuff we're taking home that didn't get done. But, progress was made, and we are responsible for our choices. It's all good.

In the vein of summertime winding down, it seems to be cicada-time. This photogenic insect in my photo today was just hanging out---presumably keeping warm on a cool morning. I've done a little research and learned that I believe this to be a Tibicen or "Dog Day" Cicada---an annual variety, found all over North America. Commonly seen in July and August, here, I believe this one is in its final days. Kelly spotted it in the MBistro and being a loyal Daily KRuMB reader, immediately pointed it out to me as a perfect photo of the day opportunity.

Look up. Look up. Cloud lovers and self-help gurus tell us.

"See" your future first, then take practical steps to make it your present.

But, what if clouds are in the way of "seeing" your future?

Whaddaya do about big ol' banks of puffy, thunder clouds gettin' in the way of your friggin' future, self-help smartypantaloons?

You know what I do?

I look down.

(Although, no finer example of why one should look up to the sky when you are walking along is on Razzbuffnik's site today. Seriously, are clouds and sky in Australia different from this hemisphere or is it that they have better photographers??)

Anyway, I am a looking down sort of girl. Can't help it. I did a series on asphalt art a while back. The result of walking in parking lots in an industrial park near my house and noticing the patterns in the asphalt.

Recently, it's been time spent looking at manhole covers. This one is my favorite so far.

Is there anyone out there I can cajole into going around their neighborhood and taking photos of their manhole covers?

I'd like to see if there is a world wide problem with manhole cover design or whether it's just in my neck of the woods.

Because, In general, I'm finding they are not exactly inspiring surfaces. I am surprised quite frankly that they haven't been "branded" for commercial purposes. The John McCain Real But Old Man Hole Cover. Or, the Hilary 18 Million Men but Mostly White Women Man Hole Cover. (Sorry, politics is on my mind). Think about it, we all see manhole covers in the course of the day but in their present state, we don't pay much attention.

But, throw a swatch of color here or there or an unusual pattern? Hey, we could fight childhood obesity by having vegetables carved into manhole covers! Just a thought, people. Lookin' Down people have imaginations, too, you know. It's just not those cloudy puffy people.

Anyway, I think if we started a campaign to put imaginations to work on manhole covers, we'd become a universe of looking down people.

No offense to cloud people, but, c'mon, you've had us captivated since the dawn of man with your puffiness.

It's time for the "Lookin' Down" people to rise up! Oh, er. Sorry, rise down!

Who'll post the first manhole cover in response to this challenge?

Anyone?

A simple manhole cover from your neighborhood to start the bidding?

Going once....

Twice....

WORD TO WISE:

No self help gurus can join the "Looking Down, The Series" cuz I know you are going to try to get us to look up. Nothing doing. You've been around since the dawn of man, too, and the world's in a total mess so it's time to give the looking down people their fair chance to mess things up.

Fair's Fair. Or, let me look out the window.

Fair to partly cloudy.
