Wherein a Githyanki hero meets her end; an artefact of unknown power is uncovered; the unlikely allies meet their first challenge and barely escape alive.

So there we were, as unlikely a group of spivs as you were ever going to get, all together on this astral dinghy. We’d been on this ride maybe a week, the first real mission we’d had for the half-a-turn we’d been on board the yellow-skins’ ship. A bit of a waster it was, too – just a routine patrol of the nearby bases – but it was the most excitement we’d had since we’d arrived.

I’d gotten to know the other cutters a bit. We was the only non-yellow skins aboard, so it was natural-like that we’d be banging around together. There was four of us in total. K’yorloth was this black-skinned elf, says he was from the Prime, but he wasn’t some clueless berk. If I be knowing anything about the Planes, he was having some kinda fiendish blood in him. Then there was the two wish-givers. Aziz was some kind of high-up from the Fire-Cage, a spell-slinger all haughty and noble-like. Suleiman was pretty much the opposite. He was normal looking, not on fire, and was some kind of plane-hopping pirate before he joined up with the yellow-skins. Then there was me, Xyn, just a Cager running a black one against those squid-heads the yellow-skins were hunting.

We was on our way back to the main ship, called something barmy like “The Steadfast and Valiant Warrior”, when all of a sudden that grey soup surrounding us started to be getting darker and darker. Suleiman was driving the dinghy, but he wasn’t tumbling to the danger, all caught up rattling his bone-box about his pirate days.
“Bar that,” I said, “and scan this. Looks like we got one of them mind-storms.” All of a sudden everyone was paying attention.
“There wasn’t a psychic storm predicted,” said Aziz.
“It’s coming in quick,” said K’yorloth, “We’ve got to get back to the barge.”
“How far away are we?”
“It’s all a matter of how far away we think we are,” answered Suleiman. “We should make it.”

Suleiman had the right of it, but there was some belly-clenching moments as we raced ahead of the storm. It wasn’t made any better when we finally caught a skeg at the yellow-skin ship, only to be seeing that it was as shadowy as the grave.
“Where’s the lights?” K’yorloth muttered, “And why haven’t they moved out of the way of the storm?” Them bigger ships, they could be taking the brunt of the mind-storm, but it’s not something they be wanting to do. It was downright odd that they’d be here right in the path of it.
“There’s trouble, I warrant ya,” I said. K’yorloth agreed and said,
“We have no choice, we’ve gotta go in.” Suleiman steered the dinghy to the docking bay, “Everyone, keep your weapons handy.”

Putting the dinghy to rest without the help of them yellow-skins was harder than we thought. We ended up getting the right of it, though, and then tried to get our bearings.
“I be hearing nothing,” I said, and the rest nodded slowly,
“We should be hearing something,” Aziz said, “There’s no sounds of people.” We sat there for a moment like some Cagestruck Primes, just trying to get the beef of it.
“We’ve got to go to the bridge,” said K’yorloth, “and see if anyone is there.”
“No, the mess hall,” said Suleiman, “That’s where the most people would be, and it’s closer.” They stared at each other for a good tick, each trying to have one up on the other. Eventually, Suleiman caved, “Alrighty, the bridge.”

We left the dock behind us and moved into the hall. We hadn’t gone far before we was running into all these yellow-skin deaders, or that’s what we was thinking at first. Weird thing was, though, that they didn’t have any marks on them like you’d expect if they’d bit the iron. They was just lying there, like they’d just rolled over and started counting worms. It was Aziz who tumbled to the dark that they weren’t in the dead-book yet.
“Actually, I think they’re still alive,” he said, bending down over one, much closer than I’d ever like to be near ‘em. Suleiman got down close too, and put his hands on one of their greasy skins.
“There’s…” he paused, “There’s nothing there. There’s nothing where their mind should be.” Suleiman was sort of part mind-nick, or something. He could be reaching into people’s idea-pots but only with their permission, or least that was what he was saying. “It’s like it’s been wiped clean.”

I didn’t like spoonbenders very much, or anyone who could be mind-hacking me, so I was looking around at other things whilst he was doing his dirty work. That’s how I saw all of these little scratches. I hadn’t noticed it before, but the more I looked, the more it looked like something I’d scanned in the Cage.
“Brain rats,” I said. The other spivs looked up,
“What?” said Aziz.
“It’s brain rats, that’s what’s done this.”
“What’s a brain rat?” asked Suleiman.
“Well,” I began, “There are these rats. And if you get one, you can squish it under your shoe, no problems. If you get two, well that’s pretty easy too. But if you be having more of them, like ten, or twenty, then they be squishing you.” Suleiman looked at me like I was spouting flam, “And they cast spells,” I added.
“It’s true,” K’yorloth said, “But they’re called cranium rats. They’re mean business if there are enough of them. Let’s get to the bridge.”

“This must have been their last stand,” said Suleiman. We were just before the bridge and there were deaders everywhere, or close enough to dead for my liking anyway. One of them I recognised. His tag was Jor’quin and he was pretty decent, for a yellow-skin. Swapped the Chant with us a time or two. Well, now he was lying back against the door, with his brain and half his face gone. Messy job they did, too, like they didn’t much care about what they were doing. The door to the bridge was broken in half like someone had bashed their way through, and K’yorloth ducked inside. I followed, thinking we’d just be seeing more of the same. But it was a bit different in there. Here the deaders weren’t left just lying around, they’d been piled up against the walls. And the Captain’s chair, it had been ripped clean out of the floor and laid down like it was a nice kip. I didn’t get much of a closer look before I heard K’yorloth make some strange noise, like he’d just been kicked in the gabs.

He was standing next to the Captain’s chair, and I walked over and looked at what he was scanning. It was the Captain, Nax’la she called herself, and some real blood she was. Could’ve run rings around the rest of us with one leg tied behind her back. And here she was, lying on the chair, with her brains splayed open like a jinkskirt’s legs. Her forehead was ripped back, her brain-box cracked, and there were bits of metal sticking in her sponge, holding the whole lot open. I almost chucked me guts right there. The worst of it was, that when Suleiman came over and did his mind-hacking, he said that in some strange way she was still alive.

He put his hand on her shoulder, and closed his peepers, and just stood there for a good tick.
“Well?” I said, “What are you scanning?” It was the first time I was ever really happy with having a mind-nick along.
“It’s,” he paused, and when he spoke again his voice was all queer-like, “It’s probably easier to show you,” and then the whole world changed.

It was like I was suddenly Nax’la. I was seeing through her peepers, and thinking with her brain-box. And I was standing there, on the bridge, so proud of myself for having played such a good trick on them gullies. They’d never even know that black box was there.

Then the scene shifted. Everything was black and I, Nax’la, was all jangled up. I didn’t know what was going on.

The world changed again. I was lying on my own chair. There was this thing leaning over me. So horrible, so frightening. It was… it was tearing my mind apart. It wanted… it wanted to know where the box was. I wouldn’t give up the location, I wouldn’t…

I tried to die. But I couldn’t. It was too strong. It stripped away my will to die like I was nothing, like I was a play-thing. I couldn’t die. I couldn’t. But I could hide it. I could still hide it. There was one place it couldn’t go. One place it would be safe…

A final thought: triumph. And the creature’s frustrated cry was like sweet ichor to my aching mind.

It took a good long tick for me to come back to myself, and I gave Suleiman a good strong stare when I did. The others were just as jangled up as I was, and Aziz was the first to speak.
“By the Flames,” he whispered, and shook his head, “Can you heal her?”
“I can heal her body,” Suleiman said, and his voice was tired, “but not her mind. It’s shattered. It’s completely gone.”
“Do you think you could find out where that black box is?”
“No,” Suleiman shook his head again, “Whatever did this to her is a thousand times more powerful than I am. If she hid it from him, then it’s beyond my ability.”
“Maybe we should… put her out of her misery,” Aziz said, and Suleiman nodded,
“There isn’t much else that we can do.”

While those two were rattling bone-boxes about putting the Captain in the dead-book, K’yorloth had got himself together and moved over to the other side of the chair. I followed him and saw that the Captain was still holding this broken chiv, half of which had melted into a puddle of grey goo. Now I’m no expert on the planes, but every cutter knows about the githyanki’s silver swords, and that was what I was scanning. Before I was saying anything about it, K’yorloth reached down and put his paws on one of the broken pieces.
“Suleiman,” he said, and the two wish-givers laid off on their conversation, “There’s something in the sword… I can’t quite make it out, it’s just a hint of an idea. Maybe you could get more from it.” Aziz made a small cry of frustration,
“Of course!” he said, “The illithid can’t touch the swords, they’ve been enchanted like that. It would have been beyond its reach! It would be the perfect place to hide something!” Suleiman walked over, and touched the same piece that K’yorloth had touched. Without any warning, the world shifted again.

Some high-up spell-slinger was standing in front of me. “They’re going to come, Nax’la, and you have to be ready.” I will be, I thought, don’t you worry.

I was putting the box in a boat, one of the fastest on the astral sea. It couldn’t be reached by the mind-flayer’s slower ships. It would be beyond them. I was hiding it so even the occupants of the boat wouldn’t know it was there, hidden just behind the small crystal of the psychic engine.

“That canny, yellow-skinned Blood!!” I shouted as soon as I was back in me own body, “She sent us on that ride to get it away from here. No one would twig to her hiding the swag with spivs like us.”
“We have to get back to the skiff,” K’yorloth said, and that’s when we heard it, scratching like thousands of small feet running across stone. We turned around to see the last of the brain rats disappearing into the walls, and then we bolted down the hallway toward the parked dinghy. As we were running there were more and more scratching in the walls around us, like thousands of rats racing in the walls, all trying to beat us there. We made it to the dock just ahead of them, and K’yorloth made a dash for the dinghy when suddenly Suleiman grabbed his shoulder, pulled him back, and pointed.

There, pacing on the sideways deck of the dinghy were three of the strangest creatures that I ever saw. They didn’t seem to be entirely *real*. They were soupy, like a lot of the stuff in the astral, but most of the time they were looking sort of like cats. Except, of course, that they had a beak for a bone-box, and eyes that glowed like the mountain of Celestia.
“What in the bleeding hells is that?” I heard myself say.
“A pet,” K’yorloth said dryly, “A guard pet. An illithid’s guard pet.” Not. Good.

Just then, I heard a sound behind me, and turned around to see the swarm of brain rats pour out of the walls. Strange thing was, half of ‘em got together in this giant puddle of rats while the other half bolted off in the direction of the ship’s engines. What would they be doing that for?

I didn’t have time to run it around my idea-pot, though, because K’yorloth suddenly cried out. I turned back to see that one of those soupy cats had leaped at him and knocked him down. Another one went for Suleiman, and the last one, well, all he did was stare at Aziz, though those strange glowing eyes of his were getting brighter when he was doing it. K’yorloth tried to stand up, but when he did the cat-thing swiped him one. Weird thing was, though, the cat’s claw just passed straight through him. I thought that meant they couldn’t be hurting us, but K’yorloth didn’t seem alright. He seemed all jangled up when he did stand up, and when he swung he missed pretty badly. Suleiman did something strange, made himself like twice as big as he was, and one of the cats did the staring thing at him. Didn’t seem to do much, though. I ran across the deck and tried to stab one of those soupy cats from behind, but it seemed to will itself away from my blade and I hit empty air. The cat that had been staring at Aziz jumped on him, but that cat was a bit of a leatherhead because the wish-giver was still on fire.

All of a sudden then I heard some strange humming sound coming from the doorway, like a bard’s song that you can only *just* here. I turned around to see this glowing ball forming above the pool of rats. `Uh oh,’ were the only thoughts I could manage before suddenly…

Absolute, unbearable pain.

I couldn’t get out of it. I couldn’t turn away from it. Wherever I went, there it was. I was trapped, trapped in the pain, and I couldn’t find my way out. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t fight.

I could still see what was going on, though, and I could still hear. I saw the others, and a few of those soupy cats, on the ground like me, clutching at their heads. Suleiman was the only one still up, and I watched him take a swing at those soupy cats. He managed to put a couple of them in the deadbook, and they exploded into this slimy-looking grey goo. The rats seemed to decide he was a threat because they jumped him. I couldn’t turn my head, but somewhere else it sounded like someone had started smashing walls for laughs.

I kept running, down long corridors lined with doors. There had to be a way out, somewhere. I started trying every door, trying to find one that didn’t lead to more pain. Searching, searching, like being stuck on the plane of mirrors and not knowing which of the doors would lead you back home.

Suleiman swiped at them with his scimitar, and a score of rats died. He swung again, and the buggers twisted away from his blade. The wall-smashing seemed to be coming closer. Like someone had wanted to get to the docks, and was taking the short-cut.

This one, this one, it had to be. It was the only one left, it was the only one. I turned the handle. And found: freedom.

I stood back up, and saw that everyone else was doing the same. One of those soupy cats was standing over Aziz though, and it was… it was pulling stuff out of him. This grey, wispy, soupy stuff, and he was moaning like it had him by the throat. I ran at it, my two chivs ready for action, but again the bastard seemed to twist away from me, like it had simply willed itself not to be struck. It didn’t have as much luck the second time, though, as K’yorloth ran over and plunged his two blades into the creature’s spine, and it melted into another puddle of astral goo.

“The skiff!” K’yorloth cried, and made a dash for the dinghy. I was going to follow, but all of a sudden there was that strange humming again, and I stopped to see that the rats had that glowing ball above them. Whatever it was doing seemed to miss me this time, though, and only Suleiman fell, screaming as he grabbed for his brain-box. Aziz finished them off by spraying them with fire from his hands.

The crashing was getting really loud. Whatever was making it was almost here. I turned and ran for the dinghy. I made to leap over the side, but forgot about the barmy gravity in the astral plane. What should have been a graceful somersault turned into a bleeding bellyflop smack bang into the dinghy’s deck.
“Come on everyone!” K’yorloth cried, “Get on board!” And Aziz, picking up the screaming Suleiman, took his bleeding time picking his way onto the boat after my example.

Somehow K’yorloth had gotten the jig into gear, and we were slowly cruising out of the docking bay when the wall separating us from the rest of the ship exploded. Some massive squid-head, with tentacles the length of a tanar’ri’s tail writhing on its face like a nest of sea slugs stepped onto the deck, with three smaller squid-heads behind it. Before I had time to think, the big one lifted its tentacles and suddenly, I was back in that mazed kip of a brain-box.

Trapped. Pain. Couldn’t find the way out. Couldn’t see the doors. Had to try every one. Had to find the way out.

Then the squid-head was lifting its hands. Was casting. Was casting something. A bright flash of light, exploding out towards us, covering us, consuming us.

Fire. Burning. Pain. Couldn’t move. Pain. Couldn’t see the doors.

But we were still moving. K’yorloth was still up, and he was guiding us out. And we were out. We were free….

And we were in the middle of the astral storm.

My ears were filled with howling, screeching, like glass being slowly ground into stone. People started swarming over me. Monsters, enemies, friends, lovers. Some mine, most of them others. They were there, they were everywhere. And I was still locked in my own mind, trying all the doors. Pain, howling, screeching, the dreams and desires and hatreds of others surrounding me. Over it all, I heard K’yorloth screaming, saying, “I’ll try to get us out of this, just hold on.” And then there was a portal. An astral conduit. What powers were looking after us? Anything had to be better than this torment. Anything.

We blitzed the portal.

And saw… Metal, a solid sheet of it, coming towards us. Or were we going towards it? It was coming closer, closer… I couldn’t move, couldn’t even cry out… closer, closer, too close.

Yay!

Paizo Publishing just announced an open call of adventure writers for their organised play campaign Pathfinder Society.

For now, they're asking for a 750-word scenario outline based on one of their two outlines. The deadline for these is Friday the 17th. And it's an exam week, yikes!

Because with schoolwork, Roolipelaaja articles, NaNoWriMo and one possible book editing job breathing down on my neck in the next few months, what I really need is another writing assignment to occupy my time, so I will be submitting them something. The worst-case scenario is that I get to write some more and someone actually pays me money to do it, which is a rare enough occurrence.

For you readers, here's yet another chance to get your name in print. Well, on a pdf.

Meanwhile, on the LFR side of things, Dalelands Point of Contact Sampo Haarlaa resigns. His position is, I believe, currently unfilled, so if you have a high tolerance for the stupid, you could take a look into it. I think the Southern Europe Writing Director and Event Coordinator posts are also vacant. Something to do with WotC alienating most of the RPGA actives in France, I think.

This is a brief character biography in Planescape Cant in preparation for my upcoming Planescape cam

This is a brief character biography in Planescape Cant in preparation for my upcoming Planescape campaign, Lords of Madness.

Xyn Sorrow - Shadar-kai (Mirrorborn) Rogue

"I be liking you, cutter, so here’s the dark of it. There was this berk called Nyx who peeled this sparkle from some high-up spellslinger. Real pretty sparkle it was too, and woulda been worth some jink. But Nyx, the addle-coved sod, was figuring the sparkle was a portal key and there’d be even more jink on the other side. So she took a dice, blitzed the portal and was hipped in the mirrors.

What she was not knowing was that a body gets doubled in the mirrors, and your double be wanting you in the dead-book. So she was awful jangled up seeing me, tried to feed me some flam about working together. Took her awhile to tumble to the dark that she was gonna be a deader if she didn’t put up her chiv. Still almost gave me the laugh, and then I woulda been hipped in the mirrors, but I nicked that leatherhead good in the end. Found once I put her in the dead-book that I was knowing everything inside her brain-box, the whole sodding lot of it. So I found me way back to the Cage, found her kip, and lived her life awhile with no one wise to the dark.

But I got bleeding sick of bobbing gullies for a living, and took up with the Takers, a Faction after me own heart. Began doing more daring jobs, started to earn a lot of jink and got known as a bit of a rounder. That’s how I heard the stype about those Iron Knights. I got the chant from a wagger that they were looking for some spivs to go after the squid-heads, and when I heard that I almost gave up the ride right then, cause no body but a barmy berk would go after the mind-flayers, even for all the sodding jink in Shurrock, and I got more worms than that in me head.

But I couldn’t zip it. Ya see, that berk Nyx who blitzed the portal, her folks were bobbed by squid-heads and she was still running a black one. She was wanting them squid-heads in the dead-book bad, and since I got all that was in her brain-box, I wanted to make them squid-heads deaders too, even though it’s a sodding barmy thing to try and do. So I signed up with those yellow-skinned egg-layers, and that’s how I found myself banging around with these bashers, bleeding barmy sods the lot of them."

HOW TO LIGHT A FIRE
Always light your fire from the upwind side. Make sure to lay your tinder, kindl

HOW TO LIGHT A FIRE

Always light your fire from the upwind side. Make sure to lay your tinder, kindling, and fuel so that your fire will burn as long as you need it. Igniters provide the initial heat required to start the tinder burning. They fall into two categories: modern methods and primitive methods.
Modern Methods

Modem igniters use modem devices--items we normally think of to start a fire.
Matches

Make sure these matches are waterproof. Also, store them in a waterproof container along with a dependable striker pad.
Convex Lens

Use this method (Figure 7-6) only on bright, sunny days. The lens can come from binoculars, camera, telescopic sights, or magnifying glasses. Angle the lens to concentrate the sun's rays on the tinder. Hold the lens over the same spot until the tinder begins to smolder. Gently blow or fan the tinder into flame, and apply it to the fire lay.

Metal Match

Place a flat, dry leaf under your tinder with a portion exposed. Place the tip of the metal match on the dry leaf, holding the metal match in one hand and a knife in the other. Scrape your knife against the metal match to produce sparks. The sparks will hit the tinder. When the tinder starts to smolder, proceed as above.
Battery

Use a battery to generate a spark. Use of this method depends on the type of battery available. Attach a wire to each terminal. Touch the ends of the bare wires together next to the tinder so the sparks will ignite it.
Gunpowder

Often, you will have ammunition with your equipment. If so, carefully extract the bullet from the shell casing, and use the gunpowder as tinder. A spark will ignite the powder. Be extremely careful when extracting the bullet from the case.
Primitive Methods

Primitive igniters are those attributed to our early ancestors.
Flint and Steel

The direct spark method is the easiest of the primitive methods to use. The flint and steel method is the most reliable of the direct spark methods. Strike a flint or other hard, sharp-edged rock edge with a piece of carbon steel (stainless steel will not produce a good spark). This method requires a loose-jointed wrist and practice. When a spark has caught in the tinder, blow on it. The spark will spread and burst into flames.
Fire-Plow

The fire-plow (Figure 7-7) is a friction method of ignition. You rub a hardwood shaft against a softer wood base. To use this method, cut a straight groove in the base and plow the blunt tip of the shaft up and down the groove. The plowing action of the shaft pushes out small particles of wood fibers. Then, as you apply more pressure on each stroke, the friction ignites the wood particles.

Bow and Drill

The technique of starting a fire with a bow and drill (Figure 7-8) is simple, but you must exert much effort and be persistent to produce a fire. You need the following items to use this method:

    * Socket. The socket is an easily grasped stone or piece of hardwood or bone with a slight depression in one side. Use it to hold the drill in place and to apply downward pressure.

    * Drill. The drill should be a straight, seasoned hardwood stick about 2 centimeters in diameter and 25 centimeters long. The top end is round and the low end blunt (to produce more friction).

    * Fire board. Its size is up to you. A seasoned softwood board about 2.5 centimeters thick and 10 centimeters wide is preferable. Cut a depression about 2 centimeters from the edge on one side of the board. On the underside, make a V-shaped cut from the edge of the board to the depression.

    * Bow. The bow is a resilient, green stick about 2.5 centimeters in diameter and a string. The type of wood is not important. The bowstring can be any type of cordage. You tie the bowstring from one end of the bow to the other, without any slack.

To use the bow and drill, first prepare the fire lay. Then place a bundle of tinder under the V-shaped cut in the fire board. Place one foot on the fire board. Loop the bowstring over the drill and place the drill in the precut depression on the fire board. Place the socket, held in one hand, on the top of the drill to hold it in position. Press down on the drill and saw the bow back and forth to twirl the drill (Figure 7-8). Once you have established a smooth motion, apply more downward pressure and work the bow faster. This action will grind hot black powder into the tinder, causing a spark to catch. Blow on the tinder until it ignites.

Note: Primitive fire-building methods are exhaustive and require practice to ensure success.

HELPFUL HINTS

Use nonaromatic seasoned hardwood for fuel, if possible.
Collect kindling and tinder along the trail. Add insect repellent to the tinder. Keep the firewood dry. Dry damp firewood near the fire. Bank the fire to keep the coals alive overnight. Carry lighted punk, when possible. Be sure the fire is out before leaving camp. Do not select wood lying on the ground. It may appear to be dry but generally doesn't provide enough friction.

Here's an experience from an anonymous victim:

"I was working with a software company in Hyderabad. A company called PathFinder Solutions Pvt. Ltd. based in Himayatnagar, Hyderabad alias SRR Inc. ( www.srrinc.net ) based in Edison, NJ approached me saying that they have seen my resume in xyz job portal, and that they have jobs that match my skills. They said that they have headquarters in Edison, New Jersey, US and they offered me a job with them. They took a money from me in the name of "refundable security

deposit" which was supposed to be refunded if my H-1B visa would get approved or returned if it gets rejected. They explained me that since they were sponsoring my H-1B which invloves a lots of money and that in past some people who expressed interest with the job initially later rejected the job offer and hence, this would act as a guarantee that I was seriously interested with their job offer, and they promised me that it would be refunded once my H-1B gets approved.

Once my H-1B got approved, SRR Inc. didn't place in any job in US for more about 8 months. When I questioned them, they replied that I shouldn't look for projects or jobs else where as they are my employers.

In the meantime they forced me to write an "3 months On-vacation letter" & threatened to revoke my H-1B if I complied. Months passed & they didn't refund my security deposit. They told that they would refund my security deposit after joining a project. I started looking for jobs where they offered me as I came to know that it is illegal to stay in US jobless for more than 45 days. But, for that, I needed employment proofs and payslips from my present company which SRR Inc. refused to give. So, I couldn't transfer to any of the new jobs. Finally, I managed to get out of this situation by getting hold of a decent job where the company lawyer took care of my entire situation. I don't have words to explain my horrible experience with SRR Inc., in USA, its people both in US and in Hyderabad. It is a big fraud. I later came to know about similar such stories from others who never got their 'security deposits' (upto 1 lakh) back even when their H1B application itself was rejected. I am going to report this story to News Channel. "

I'll be running FH one more time this Sunday. It's been fun, but it may be for the last time (for a while, anyway). Our other DM is back and, I'm hoping, he'll be running Pulp Hero in two weeks. I enjoyed the first (and only) session we played and I'm looking forward to "fleshing out" my detective character.

I will have to say, I had more fun running FH than I thought I would have. I've never bothered trying to run a fantasy game as I've never been a big fantasy book reader. I've been tinkering with the setting quite a bit, just to make it a bit more unique and it's gotten me really into enjoying running it.

I've been reading the Pathfinder Beta rules recently. Just looking at the changes they've made so far. I really enjoy the stuff Paizo produces and, so far, this hasn't been a disappointment. Well, maybe I'll do a little review once I'm doing reading (which may be a while as the older I get the slower I read).

The thing about the second day…we

Hi there!!! I am back to go through the rest of the story.

The thing about the second day...we did not do the go-kart store this day. It was Wednesday that we did the go-kart store. Everything else was the same as in Part 1.

Wednesday...THE TRADE SHOW. My first trade show. This show was for amusement / theme park entertainment groups. I scored a pass as I work for Western Speedway and I know the important people there. I was really excited about this and took quite a few pictures of the event, people, displays and actual rides. All were set up for people to use or try for free. Also, POS operating system software companies were there to help to promote their product. I found this actually more interesting than the rides and games provided. http://www.flickr.com/photos/karmashots/sets/72157607295303476/

One software provider, Gatemaster, proved not to disappoint either in sales / promotion or as down-to-earth have a good time people. http://www.gatemaster.com/ Andy and Tiffany were hard at work when Ian and I showed up there.

Another interesting conversation I had was with Richard Bernal of Mountain Coin Machine Distributors. http://www.flickr.com/photos/karmashots/2858206965/ Richard is not only a business man but also an avid photographer. Very easy to talk with about his product line and even got a bit of history on his life in the process. This is one person I hope to get the chance to meet again. Great guy!!!

After chatting a bit with exhibitors, Ian & I walked around, taking in all that there was to see. I took more pics and then we called it a first day. Great day here!!! Hoping to go back again next year.

The afternoon was when we hit the hotel room, left a few things, picked up a few things then headed out to the go-kart shop near the RIO Hotel. Interesting shop. Ian was there to look at parts, kits, thingamajigs and books. Really nice staff there. Will do an update on the place and website when I can get it.

Then back to the Hotel. This turned out to be an event. The cab taking us back to the Strip had a flat tire. We had to wait for a rescue cab to come and get us. Never been through that before. But found out with all of this that there are over 500 cab outlets in Las Vegas alone...a lot of them owned by the same company. That's one way to get every dime you can out of fare-goers. GO CABBIES GO!!!

We noticed that when back at the hotel Ian's fanny pack with his camera was missing. I originally thought he might have left it at the trade show so I started retracing our steps. Ian was adamant that he brought it back to the room and left it on the bed. Ian is not one to forget things like that so we contacted Hotel security and they were great on handling everything.

It was then off to meet Andy & Tiffany from Gatemasters (and a few of their friends / business cohorts) at Bahama Breeze for dinner. It was great meeting Mark & Brett from American Bowling, and the others (too many people...only one day in but loved it). After dinner, we all took cabs to New York New Your to go to The ROK. Really nice and very expensive. The thing I liked about this was that for the whole time we were there, only one waitress served our group and only our group. Dancing and drinking prevailed. Then it was time to head back to the hotel. Thank goodness for the Deuce Bus and 24 hours service.

Day four and five...same things again except for the partying. I wanted to try and capture some of the pictures that were lost when Ian's camera went missing. I got the Bellagio watershow. We also went to the Luxor and a few other places.

Then on day 5...pack up everything, go for one last walk towards Bonanza stores and Sahara Hotel and then shuttle to the plane. See you soon Vegas...really soon :)

I had a wonderful time, met awesome people, finally found free wi-fi, took lots of pictures and got to spend some quality time with Ian. Now I know why I have the best friend in the world...he can put up with me. Nawhhhh...I am not that bad...just a little of the wild side sometimes ;-)

Thank you for reading!!! Cheers everyone!

I appear to have failed some Fort saves in the last week or so and am now struggling with a particularly nasty flu. When I haven't been leaking blood and mucus on the keyboard, I've been keeping up with the gaming world.

4E Settings

A lot of news from Gen Con still don't seem to have trickled into the general consciousness, even though it was weeks ago. From the Dragonlance Canticle podcast we learn that Dragonlance was confirmed to be on the way as a 4E adaptation. It's now a toss-up between Dragonlance, Dark Sun and Greyhawk for the 2010 setting. Thee horror setting Ravenloft, it seems, will be "folded into the core" in the online Dragon, which is even worse for setting integrity than Forgotten Realms 4E. I've actually levelled this criticism at the "points of light" concept itself, but it works even better for Ravenloft, because the xenophobia isn't just implied, it's a significant trope. When you have secluded, superstitious villagers, tiefling warlocks and dragonborn get burned at the stake.

Also, I don't really see horror gaming working with a system that's weighted toward tactical combat and based on the concept of character empowerment even more than any of its predecessors.

Rogue Trader

On a far more positive note, Fantasy Flight Games announced that they'll be going ahead with Black Industries' original plan for the Warhammer 40,000 roleplaying games, and will be releasing Rogue Trader sometime next year.

For those of you who don't remember the original announcement, the concept is that the first game, Dark Heresy, covers playing Inquisitorial agents, members of the retinue of an Imperial Inquisitor. They ferret out plots against the Imperium, hunt down mutants, heretics and aliens, and are generally a cheerful bunch. As a point of note, Dark Heresy has the grisliest critical hit charts I've ever seen.

Then, there's Rogue Trader, where you play as members of a rogue trader's crew, which should open up the possibility of alien characters or even full-fledged Inquisitors (something Dark Heresy does not cover).

Finally, we ought to be getting Deathwatch, where you play the best of the best of the best - the Adeptus Astartes of the Deathwatch Chapter, subject to Ordo Xenos of the Inquisition, picked from their home chapters for a tour of duty as heavy muscle for the Inquisition, for when a pocked of alien scum needs to absolutely, positively, be scoured off the face of the planet. Mmmm, space marines...

Tangentially related, here's the funniest summary of the WH40K setting I've seen: TVTropes.org's article.

Rogue Games Announces Contest for Game Design and Art

Rogue Games wants amateur game designers and artists to submit their work for a global contest for their Thousand Suns supplement. The winning entries will end up in the supplement, which will be released at Gen Con 2009.

So, if you're a young hopeful, can hold a pen the right way up, and want your name in a book, and haven't been published professionally in the gaming field, here's your chance.

I think this is a fairly cool idea. The pay is crap, but I've received considerably less compensation for most of the stuff that makes me ineligible for it.

(Via LivingDice.com.)

Pathfinder Society Continues in Finland

We've been working hard on getting the PFS campaign really up and running. We've set up a page on a local gaming wiki for campaign info in Finnish, and I'm putting wheels in motion over here in Tampere. Should be getting games together starting next week, if I'm lucky.

In addition to being the first Finnish Pathfinder Society DM a couple of weeks back, I also ended up the first character death last weekend. My cleric of Cayden Cailean, Glen lhap Roy, was shot through the head with a longbow. From full hit points to -18. Critical hits can be cruel.

I don't mourn. Didn't lose out on experience points, didn't die until the end of the (very good) module, and had fun playing. My next character is Adhemar of Senara, a Chelaxian hellknight armiger.

If you're running a Mac (currently ten five something in my case) and use PathFinder, you might also like Fn-Cmd-F8 (or Fn-Apple-F8 if you prefer that) to show a list of the available applications. Handy: You get a list of the icons & application names - all of them.

One of the one I (re-) discovered is ScreenShade, which allows fine tuning the screen brightness to a finer degree than the brightness control that comes with Mac OS X. Especially you can dim the monitor(s) to a quite low brightnes which is a Good Thing in a dark-ish environment.

Saat aku ditawarin naik G. Gede, ada perasaan membuncah di dada.. I will climb that Mountain again.. And I Will Shout my Son Name.... IMMANUEL... And I Do it...

Help Us God...!!!!

Hari Sabat berangkat jam 9 pagi dari rumah, naik KRL ke bogor... sampe bogor jam 11, nunggu keretanya lama banget boss... di tengah jalan di sms ama Temen suruh ngajar Pathfindernya, yeee.. dah di daerah bogor, jadi minta maaf ga boisa ngajar... sampe bogor trus naik angkot ke arah baranangsiang... sialnya ketipu sama sopir angkot kebawa ke sukasari... tapi tetap cool... secara aku master guide kan... sms Sheila. P buat nyari makanan di bogor.. nga dibales yah udah cari angkot ke arah ciawi trus lanjut naik bis 3/4 ke arah cianjur....

sampai cibidas telpon MG.

pukul 20.30 wib kami berangkat menuju jakarta, membawa semua kenangan indah mendaki gunung gede, next time I will climb up the mountain with my wings with my son... I dreams...
