First beta of Firefox 3.1, its next major browser release. You can grab the beta right here on mozilla.com in Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux flavors. Little has changed compared to Firefox 3 from a cosmetic standpoint, although you'll encounter new features like the graphical tab switcher (brought up by hitting CTRL-TAB with a few tabs open). Mozilla developers seem to have focused the bulk of their efforts on under-the-hood changes, like the addition of the TraceMonkey JavaScript rendering engine. TraceMonkey isn't on by default because of reliability concerns, Ars says, but you can enable it by typing "about:config" in the address bar, finding the "javascript.options.jit.content" variable, and setting it to "true."

A recent blog post from a Microsoft spokesperson revealed the official naming for the new version of Windows. This was followed by some questioning from the media and blogosphere, which led to a second post on why they went with the name.

I spent several years working at OfficeMax, mostly in electronics. I was there for the release of Windows 98 SE, Millinium Edition, and XP. People were very confused. They didn't understand what 98 SE was, why XP was such an important upgrade from ME, or especially the difference in ME and 2000. The continual changes in naming schemes led to lots of confusion. Plus, in all honesty it was just dumb marketing that might have helped to sell more copies, but it ultimatly upset and confused end users, and was a pain for anybody trying to sell Microsoft products. Not to mention the Windows 95 naming set off the entire software industry to go away from the (somewhat) intelligent version X.X.X style nameing scheme.

I now have a Macintosh, and I had little to no interest in Vista. Prior Windows versions I was running alpha and beta versions months ahead of release. But I think Microsoft is turning a major corner. I think the company has realized that the monopoly days are over, and they will have to produce quality product to keep market share. Open Office is stagnent, but Google Docs and the like are really filling that hole for many users. The Macintosh and Linux platforms are rapidly improving. Microsoft is doing a better job with new and innovative products. As much as people hate the "ribbon" interface in Office, it truely makes the beast of a system it is much easier to use. The Zune and Zune Marketplace are great products, but they are just in the opposite position Microsoft is used to due to the iPod and iTunes grasp on the market. And the XBOX has quickly moved to become the new king of the hill in the video game segment, right as that market has grown from being fairly niche to being incredibly wide-spread.

If Microsoft stayed the way they were through the last decade, they would be on a road to ruin, but I think Micorsoft has a strong future, but it will be with far more benefit for the consumer.

Znamy już oficjalną nazwę kolejnego systemu operacyjnego, następcy Windows Vista. Finalna wersja nowego systemu zostanie wydana pod dotychczas używaną nazwą kodową – Windows 7.

Wiadomość tę Microsoft podał na oficjalnym blogu Windows Vista. Nietypową sytuację Gigant z Redmond tłumaczy, sięgając do historii i wyjaśniając przyczyny i czynniki wpływające na dotychczasową nomenklaturę kolejnych wersji systemu.

As you know, I am a Linux user since some years ago, and despite I use also OSX, I think Linux is best in some ways, and can be used by every people interested in learning a new, free, stable and usable system. I always say that anybody can learn and use Linux, but, obviously, you need an effort, as, for example, you need an effort for learn a new language.

I don' t want to lie: Linux isn't easy. Is easier than some years ago, but in my opinion is far of being as intuitive as OSX is today; and possibly, it never will. Note that I don't want to scare you!

Many people enjoy this difficulty of Linux, because they think that Linux is an OS only for a little group of geeks that really knows what Linux is, and that the rest of mortals are condemned to use Windows or OSX. That is not Freedom, isn't it? It is supposed that Linux may be used by lots of people, and extremists are not helping. If a new Linux user have a problem, and you can help him, please, help him. I don' t mean to do all work for him, I mean helping him finding the way to fix the problem. And this is not only "search in Google".

I have also to say that Windows is not a piece of crap. Maybe you don't like it, but If someone tells me that he actually loves Microsoft Windows, I won't start laughing and enumerating what facts I don't like of it. Freedom is simple: use what you want. No matter if it isn't cool or pretty. Extremists aren't cool :P In conclusion: use what you like :D Is simple!

Berikut nama-nama aneh keluaran Ubuntu:

Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger

Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake

Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft

Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex (will be coming soon)

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope (next year)

Copied from Apple? I hope they didn't pay some expensive product consultant to come out with this name. Personally I'm neutral to the new name, it is the OS itself that matter. And I sure hope that the pre-beta that Microsoft is going to review is closer to the one that they are going to ship.

Wow the community are finally getting what they want. Ben Rockwood's Blog at cuddletech had a bit about Solaris certification and I posted my 2 cents. It is a good day to see training from the ground up for specific roles is on its way.

The one day Open Solaris training covers:

What makes OpenSolaris interesting? (presentation, 30 min)

OpenSolaris basics - getting started, users & roles, desktop, SMF, IPS (hands-on-lab, 60 min)

ZFS - revolution in file systems (hands-on-lab, 60 min)

Extreme observability with DTrace (hands-on-lab, 60 min)

Developing on OpenSolaris - Sun Studio, AMP stack, NetBeans
(hands-on-lab, 30 min)

Useful command line tools in OpenSolaris (hands-on-lab, 60 min)

I hope this moves forward and covers allot more with certification exams that can be done at SUN education partners for a almost free price.

The word vista, which was probably imported into English from Spanish, means a pleasing view, esp. one seen through a long, narrow opening. This is most ironic in the context of the latest offering from Redmond, which I had seen here and there but never actually used.

I recently picked up a no-name (well, it does have a brand, and a popular one at that, but the hardware manufacturer has nothing to do with this particular gripe, and I will appreciate being spared the install Linux diatribe) for a friend. This friend, who is not a computer whiz, speaks Spanish, so I wanted to switch the language in the OS to Spanish. Sounds sensible, right?

Asides from the horribly busy interface (discerning input boxes and even windows on the screen was a challenge, and giving up something like 35% of the browser's useful real state, i.e., actual content, in the name of title bars, menus, plugin messages, search bars, tabs and frames annoyed me in extremis), I was unable to configure the thing to display menus and such in Spanish. In the process, I learned about LIPs and MUIs, I read a few [useless] threads on how to activate the Spanish translation (I apparently needed to install an undownloadable LIP, but only if I'm using something or other edition), and ended up nowhere. Ironic as well the whole Genuine Advantage gig. I gave up. Time's valuable.

Compare this to the PowerBook I gave my Mom a while back: System Settings -> International -> Language -> Spanish. Log out. Log back in. Heck, I'll trow in a reboot just to try and even things out a bit. Done. Move on with life.

I'm glad a lot of people find Vista useful (and pretty, I suppose) enough to endure it. I'll spare you the expletives. Perhaps I'm getting too old to tinker like in the good old days, tho language installation (really, it should simply be activation) doesn't qualify as tinkering in my book. When I tell people I last used Windows in the mid 90's (I did use NT for about 4 months at Systemhouse), they sometimes look at me funny. But then again: I don't have to endure my operating system. I use it and be done with it.

Pesan CD Melalui ShipIt
CD Edubuntu : https://shipit.edubuntu.org

This weekend, Microsoft quietly rolled out a preview release of the Microsoft PC Advisor to select members of the Windows Feedback Program. (Members of the Windows Feedback Program agree to let Microsoft monitor their machines closely, and Microsoft uses that data to determine what types of problems real users experience.) The invitation to try out the PC Advisor made some intriguing promises—the app will monitor our PC for problems and give solutions in real time and it will monitor system settings for potential pitfalls.
