Somebody was singing in our neighborhood to Sean Kingston’s Beautiful Girls. It really caught

Somebody was singing in our neighborhood to Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls. It really caught my attention because the person sang the chorus erroneously -

"You're way too beautiful girl
That's why it'll never work
You'll have me so excited, so excited"

Frankly, I wasn't excited at the wrong lyrics. I wasn't sure at first if I knew the correct lyrics and that maybe I was actually wrong to think that it shouldn't be "so excited". So I checked it online and it turns out that the correct lyrics should be -

"You're way too beautiful girl
That's why it'll never work
You'll have me so suicidal, suicidal"

If the guy was singing on The Singing Bee, he'd be ejected outright.

The show is interesting, and fun to watch (admittedly) however, the mechanics should be tweaked. I mean think about it. A contestant has to travel all the way to the studio to participate. There's the preliminary elimination, then three more rounds.

Imagine during the preliminaries, just one lyrics slip and you're out of the game. Shouldn't there at least be a consolation prize? You'd be better off playing in their previous show, Deal or No Deal. I guess that's why there have only been 3 winners (with one winning twice! - Ms. (or Mr.?) Aiza Seguerra, won a cool Php 2.M in total earnings).

I like the idea that they put artists and professional singers in the show, but that's just unfair in terms of the contest. I would assume that singers know more lyrics than non-professional singers. My statement holds truest for professional singers who have revived old songs and did covers.

Going back, I don't mind people singing the wrong lyrics. I'm not a petty officer of the lyrics police. Heh. I even once parodied an old love song and linked it with the issue of a Hong Kong artist who fired too many Filipina maids (a pace setting 21 maids in 3 years, that's almost one new maid for every month)

What I am particular about are songs with Tagalog lyrics derived from American songs - like my current hate song - Lululu. I blogged about this and people were kind enough to post videos and lyrics. A blog reader - Calvin - posted the lyrics to one of the worst songs I have heard in years. Migs posted the video.

Rafael, another visitor to my post about the sad state of the local music scene, stated that stations like 90.7 and 101.1 cater to the masa, that is why they have songs like Lululu blasting through the airwaves. Usually these stations are played by drivers of public transportation units like jeeps and taxis, and to a certain extent, buses. I once blogged randomly about local transport music and the famous tagline of 102.7 Star FM before.

Read the post to find out what STAR stood for. If there is a stigma about elevator music abroad, I guess the local counterpart is the public transportation music.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't mind it if the intent to translate foreign songs into Tagalog is humor - like what Michael V did before. But if it's like that dreadful Payong song, never mind, I'll switch the station instead.

Y'all have a nice weekend. Catch you on my next post!

P.S. i.e. Personal Statement -

I'll be coming up with something new for my blog soon, so watch out for it. It won't be glitzy but hopefully it will razzle dazzle you. I have high hopes for my blog as it will soon celebrate its first year anniversary!

I myself couldn't believe I've managed to maintain this blog for that long. I have blogged about so many things - love, current events, music, etc etc. One of my most treasured entries is this old post, and I hope you enjoy reading it. I like to go back to it once in a while to keep me going (on blogging).

FIrst Year! Yay! o.O

Since I've blogged about Inquirer's Radio online, it has become my most read blogged post ever. It has served the purpose for most of our expats and OFWs who Googled Philippine Radio Stations Online and relieved homesickness, I suppose. However, I've been contacted by some of Blogbastic! readers and visitors inquiring about 90.7 Love Radio. The Manila-based radio station is one of the most popular radio stations in the Philippines and appeals to the masses because of its lively programming and witty Disc Jockeys.

I've made online searches for any source of online broadcast streaming of Love Radio to no avail. So, I decided to write a person connected with Manila Broadcasting Company , the owner of the station, and inquire if they are broadcast streaming but as of this writing, I have yet to receive a response.

If you are kind enough to lend a hand and you are based in Manila, you might want to contact the station manager of Love Radio and inform them that a number of OFWs and expats are requesting that Love Radio find a way to broadcast online. It might be better if some will be able to ask permission from the station to stream the broadcast of the station online! Hopefully this call will be noticed by someone with close network to the station.

As one of my readers said, kailangan pa bang i-memorize yan?! :)

Every weekday morning, when I still lived in Sampaloc, I'd ride the colorum vans going to Makati. And every damn morning, the vans are tuned in to love radio. My eardrums suffered from the antics of balahura and balasubas, that girl and boy duo that made my seatmates laugh soundlessly or smile wickedly, and me seethe with anger.

When I started living in Makati, my daily commute became cab rides, and the drivers are still tuned in to love radio. I have never been spared.

But recently, I noticed that the cabs I rode are no longer tuned in to love radio. As of late, every time I ride a cab, they're now listening to energy fm. Now this does not mean I am grateful to be spared of the eardrum-blasting antics of love radio. Because energy fm seemed, at least to me, a copycat of love radio's tried and tested formula of green jokes, ear-splitting fillers, obnoxious djs and jologs music. I haven't been a radio listener long enough to know if this formula had been existent even before love radio.

If the masa listens to this, then is this the death of culture?

F<strike>inally, after a long wait is over to the maximum level eclavou</strike>! I could not imagine myself talking that way, but needless to say, the Tambalang Nicole-Hyala and Chris-tsuper has now become a household and FX staple. Just recently, rumors have been circulating about a Love Radio Tambalan album that will include songs sung by no less than the Tambalan themselves – Nicole-Hyala and Chris-tsuper.

Nicole-Hyala herself confirmed of this upcoming album in the Tambalanonline.Niceboard.com forum. Ivory Records will distribute the album. And as of press time, Nicole divulged two titles “Nakakalurkei” and “Shala!”. Not very suprising, anyway. The album will be called “Hey! Tambalan Na! The Nakakalurkei Album!” and as Nicole said, will be priced Php 199 only.

It’s indeed interesting to know how that an album with the famous on-air tandem has finally realized. Reminds me though of Chico and Delamar in the 90s, who were morning show DJs then at DWKC 93.9. They did a song called “Let’s Talk About Love”, which was really a huge hit.

No word yet on the official release of the Love Radio Tambalan album, but Nicole-Hyala is hoping no one will upload the songs on the internet once the album is out. Congratulations in advance to Nicole and Chris, Love Radio and Ivory Records. And oh, I’ve also heard that Frio, who sang the Love Radio jingle, will also be a part of the Love Radio Tambalan album.

In my wonderful field of work, meeting up with certain key people from the world of publishing is an

In my wonderful field of work, meeting up with certain key people from the world of publishing is an everyday happening. Chances are, if you really read the magazines you, well, read, you’d know that the number 1 magazine in the Philippines is FHM and it’s published my Summit Media.

On the other hand, there are the notable contenders like Maxim from ABS-CBN publishing, Manifesto from the makers of C! and Calibre, Manual from Mega, and Uno from 5 Leaf Publishing. Though Manifesto and Manual may deny this comparison, them being high-end or targeted to another market, they are still birds of the same feather for the general reading public.

Anyway, an observation I have in dealing with them is simply stated in the title: Summit versus the World. In every lunch meeting, quick coffee, or even a phone conversation, other publishers would always mention Summit. In any given case, this magazine/publisher would compare themselves to FHM or Summit from all aspects of existence such as cover girls, articles, and wholesomeness (if you know what I mean).

However, if you speak from the snotty guys from Summit (well, not everyone, but being #1 gives them the right to do so), they only speak of nothing else but Summit. Nothing else is ever mentioned. They are the world, the world is them. Or at times, the world revolves around them. Since I am not the kind of person who would drop names, brands, etc. out of social-climbing desires, the mention of their “unworthy competitions” are never ever brought up.

This brings us again to one of my favorite statements in marketing:

"No one can make you feel inferior without your permission.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

If you’ve ready my blog, you’d notice how much I keep on professing this powerful statement. In fact, the guys from 7-Eleven are also doing this: what Ministop? No matter how small or big or fun or serious you are, you should always watch out from falling out of this paradigm. Love Radio failed. Nike failed. God knows who else would fall unto this trap.

When I say don’t ever mention your competition, I’m not saying you ignore them. For crying out loud, I know a lot about my company’s competition even to the freaky point that I have their key decision makers’ pictures and profiles stashed in a manila envelope somewhere humorously labeled “Hit List”.

Yes, blatant or direct name-calling is prevalent in the USA unlike here in the Philippines. Some may say that it is time to change, but for me, today is by far the best time to stick to this method. The best war in our world history is not World Wars I and II! The Gulf War or the War on Terrorism cannot even come close. The best war is the Cold War, because it is the war of ideology, a war of the mind.

The same thing should go with marketing. Keep it silent. Play with the mind. Never recognize the competition up front and always make sure your market follows suit. If you know how to play this game, you’d always be on top of everything. You’d even have that sinful pleasure of making your competition wither in their seat. After all, hate is not the opposite of love. Ignorance is bliss.
