When working a 'real' job, the days dragged beyond measure. Now I work for myself and the days fly by.

I have the same hours in the day but this accelerated time-sense is completely throwing me out of whack. I am behind schedule, and though it is a schedule of my own making, it is schedule created for the purpose of being able to pay the bills.

Today I am taking concrete income-building steps which may ease the vague sense of panic that is building within. There's only so much research one can do before it stops having any meaningful impact.

The biggest challenge to being an entrepreneur is time management.

I knew it but I didn't really know it. Suddenly routine, banal and hated, is vital for success.

I thought I'd love being able to do whatever I want to do whenever I want to do it, the truth of the matter is that doing whatever you feel like doing will leave you completely unproductive at the end of the week. And in my particular instance, unproductivity means no money.

When people suggest that you do the things you least want to do first, it is priceless priceless information from which to begin to build your mini-empire.

I am now convinced that at the end of the day it's the people who persist in the banal, the systemic, the unsexy that are the very people who attain success.

Meine Highlights:

IHK, Person A-"Machen Sie doch in Ihrem Betrieb die Ausbildung" (Suuuper Idee!

Wer also sollte mir diese Umschulung finanzieren?

The ethnic market has been something I've been looking at for awhile. It's definitely a key expansion ground if you want to keep your farm or urban farm on the cutting edge of the food revolution. After all, immigrants will be making up most of the population growth in much of the nation.

What sort of ethnic vegetables could we grow on urban land (likely the fast growing sorts)? Or in a hoophouse or greenhouse?

Now all we need is to be able to grow some high protein, highly nutritious grains like amaranth and teff on a large yet sustainable scale. Perhaps on 20 acre farms? Is it time for a food staples revolution? Maybe combine it with beans and peas and lentils?

What do you think? What else should we be growing in the GTA, the Greenbelt or Ontario?

Bob Baloch, wife Farida, son Ali, 6, and daughter Hirra, 8, pick the last of their crop Oct. 11, 2008 on their 0.2-hectare plot at the McVean Farm in Brampton.

FRESH PICKINGS

A few crops grown at the McVean Incubator Farm:

OKRA: This fuzzy green vegetable is known for its seedy and slimy interior, and grows five to 17 centimetres long. A member of the cotton family, okra was originally discovered in Ethiopia in the 12th century.

EGGPLANT: The eggplant is a member of the nightshade family native to India. The large, deep purple eggplant – sometimes called Italian eggplant – is commonly found in Ontario grocery stores.

BITTER GOURD: Also known as bitter melon, bitter gourd thrives in hot climates and is said to be an acquired taste. It is green and bumpy, like a wrinkled cucumber.

Immigrants learn basics of growing crops here; others benefit with fresh callaloo, okra, garlic

October 13, 2008
Nicole Baute
STAFF REPORTER
Anan Lololi shows off rows of callaloo growing in a Brampton field. The plants are closely shorn, with leaves that look like spinach, but bigger.

"They call it pigweed ... but it is one of the most popular foods in the Caribbean," Lololi says, still incredulous at the inglorious name after living in Canada for almost 30 years.

Lololi, who is originally from Guyana, likes to sauté his callaloo in garlic and olive oil.

"There definitely is a market for it, you know? We're importing callaloo from Jamaica and the Philippines and it grows wild here."

Callaloo is just one of the crops being grown by the non-profit Afri-Can FoodBasket and other groups at the McVean Farm. The new 35-acre incubator farm is owned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and rented to a Guelph-based not-for-profit organization called FarmStart, which teaches new farmers the agricultural basics and rents them land and equipment at steep discounts.

There are common crops at McVean – tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins and strawberries – but also callaloo, okra, chiles, bitter gourds and "dragon hot" Indian peppers. Some of these items are rare in Ontario fields, but pair the ethnic diversity of the GTA with the local food movement – and add new Canadians with agricultural ambitions – and they begin to poke out of the soil.

This Thanksgiving weekend the first harvest at McVean drew to a close as the budding farmers picked the last of their crops and began to prepare the land for winter.

Sure, doctor, what can I do for you, says the patient.

"Would you scream in the most earsplitting, piercing screams you can manage? Try to make it sound as if you're in terrible pain." The doctor says.

"But why, doctor, you've always been gentle with me and your treatments have never caused me any pain?" Asks the patient.

"Yes," Says the doctor in a matter-of-fact tone, "but I have a 4 o'clock tee time at the golf course I don't want to miss, and my waiting room is still full of patients."

So I once read somewhere a quote that someone had found from a link to a blog about an article about

So I once read somewhere a quote that someone had found from a link to a blog about an article about a book, which said you should never explain or apologize for not blogging lately, cause nobody really cares, and if they do they are annoyed that you wrote that. Or something like that... So because of the wise words of some random person that somebody heard about and told someone I knew or something, I have no explanation for not blogging. I just confused the crap out of myself though...

Anyway, life in Anchorage has been pretty good. It is nice to get settled in and have a new city start feeling like home. Mostly. The fall here was absolutely amazing! The colors were beautiful and the weather was awesome. Notice I said "was". Yes, fall is gone already. We have had two fairly heavy snowfalls already and I just have this gut feeling that there will probably be a little more before the year is done. I just kind of have this knack for predicting weather. Must be genetic or something. Check out the progression of Alaska over the last month or so:

That is just crazy. I am enjoying it though. It is something new. And ski season starts up soon! I am heading out to the annual Anchorage "ski swap" this weekend to try and find a good deal on some used skis. I am pumped!

In other news, the job is going great. I really love working with youth. All the youth at Trinity are awesome, and soon I will get to add another aspect to my job - substitute teaching in area schools. I feel like it is just a really cool idea to help build relationships with students, teachers, and other youth staff. It is such an unbelievable blessing that I get to work with youth full time. Wow.

I've been playing my guitar a lot more lately. I play in the band at church and I have also been jamming out on my own more. I started taking lessons again at the beginning of September and I have learned a ton and really improved quickly. It is really amazing how much faster I progress when I have someone teaching me techniques instead of just trying to figure out specific songs on my own. I know that during the few months that I took lessons back in 2003, I progressed more than in the 2 years before that and probably the 5 years since. I feel the same way this time. I am starting to understand music in a much deeper sense and finding ways to incorporate basic scales better and jazz things up a little. It's really fun.

I've started playing in an adult city soccer league (indoor) and I am discovering once again that I am completely out of shape. After our first game, I was huffing and puffing and wheezing a little and I got the hiccups for about 11 hours. That was weird... I have met some new folks (including another Fightin Texas Aggie, whoop) and I enjoy competing even at a sport I pretty much suck at.

Anchorage life is pretty good. It is kind of hard sometimes to try and keep my heart into what I am doing where I am when my mind wanders to people I miss far away. But I really truly believe this is where I am meant to be right now. And that is awesome.

I've got a fun announcement coming up here in the very near future. So check back soon.

Oh, and my fun thought of the day. I bet that unless you are from Alaska, I am your westernmost friend. Just let that sink in.

As always, visits are welcome. And encouraged. That's right, I am inviting you - yes, you, blog reader - to come to Anchorage. World class skiing and snowboarding, northern lights viewing, and more in the winter. Unparalleled outdoor activities in the summer (hiking, fishing, World Beard Championships, etc.). So come one, come all, come to Alaska. You'll love it here. Okay, I am officially a huge nerd. Peace.

To love someone this much? I love Hannah so much, I cant imagine life without her, and I barely reme

To love someone this much? I love Hannah so much, I cant imagine life without her, and I barely remember life before her. I was looking at her newborn photos yesterday and got kinda sad because I no longer remember what it was like when she was that little, and holding her in my arms. In a way I want this moment to last forever, I dont want her to grow up, but I'm so excited about the many milestones she is still to reach: rolling, crawling, walking, talking...sigh...

I love her so much that I'm worried about what would happen if I was to have a new baby...I'm scared that Hannah may feel left out and no one will love her as much as they did...or maybe I wont love the new baby as much? Ridiculous I know...but as for now, I cant possibly have another baby until Hannah stops being a baby. She needs my love and devotion undividedly and I cant give 2 babies that much attention. Hopefully there wont be any accidents and I dont have another bub until Hannah is at least 18 months.

Hannah is growing so fast, and babbling more and more each day. She is more alert and playful and likes to let off little squeals and shrieks...she is so adorable. I love her soo much.

I decided to look up homeschooling and see what its all about and what it involves...and Im beginning to think whether I can provide an education for my child for 18 years. I've just realised the enormity of what is involved and I guess I'm worried there may be days where I'm too tired or lazy to provide her an adequate education...so maybe an SDA primary school is a better option? I dont know. Whatever the decision, I will definitely not be sending her to day care...I wont return to work until Hannah is at school...unless of course circumstances arise. But for now, I will leave that with God...theres still plenty of time to think about it.

Onto other things...its October already! Last year I was waiting and counting down until I gave birth...now Hannah is nearly 14 weeks! I cant believe the end of the year is nigh already...so fast...maybe I'm getting too old, hehe. Its been an exciting and happy year with the birth of Hannah...not much else since I didnt work...but I am finishing uni once and for all in 2 weeks and will graduate in April next year, God-willing. Yay! So looking forward to it, although I'm not sure social work is what I want to do for the rest of my life at least it will provide me with options. I'm sad that I wont be graduating with my peers though.

Next year! Well, I have graduation, Hannah will be 6 months then 12 months! And I will possibly look into getting pregnant again (at least December...hopefully not earlier). Thats my plan...not that exciting, but something to look forward to. Possibly also moving as this rental house is on the market, so that should be interesting, seeing where we will end up. I dont have any worries though, I pray that God will lead us in the right direction.

When it comes to friendships, I'm happy with the way things are. I dont see my friends as often as I used to, only when they come over...I havent hung out or gone shopping with anyone since....last year?!?! But I dont mind, Hannah occupies most of my time anyway. Also, most of them have settled with their partners and are busy with their jobs and study so I guess its not just me. We're at this age where everyone is focusing on work or study, I guess cos it will set up their future for the next few years. I of course chose family over career so dont have to worry about it now, but I know that most of my friends, only one is engaged, the rest are saving up...I guess for a house, which is what most of them want. I dont think I will even consider a house for at least 10 years...have to work and save up for a deposit and that wont happen for at least 5 years...so yeah. I'm happy though. I have to keep reminding myself that I chose this path, and to be happy with it and not covet my friends lives.

As the ongoing crisis slowly pervades Russia’s financial centers, Moscow and other big Russian cities are starting to feel the heat from this economic meltdown. Experts expect its impact to be felt on the job market in the coming months, but the restrictions of the Russian labor legislation mean that there will be few major layoffs. Instead, income levels will fall. As such, institutional and legal changes are needed to allow employers more leverage and flexibility in adjusting to a tougher economic environment.

I made a huge mistake last week at work. Basically, my boss gave me a small but time consuming task,

I made a huge mistake last week at work. Basically, my boss gave me a small but time consuming task, and I never properly took care of it. I always kept delaying the task because 1. it was low priority (it's only marginally related to my sales position), 2. it's very time consuming (I didn't want to spend business hours doing it when I have more pressing things to worry about), and 3. I was never given a deadline on when it had to be accomplished. I let it slip last week that I never actually finished the task (I didn't think it was a big deal, and I was going to finish it soon), and my boss got really upset with me.

My boss wasn't so much upset because I hadn't done what he asked (though I'm sure that's part of it) but moreso because I hadn't communicated to him that I didn't have time (or didn't want to take the time) to do it. If I was too overwhelmed with work, he could reassign the task to someone else who could get the job done. Since he always assumed everything was fine, the task went unfinished for months.

Of course, I should've known better than to think it was acceptable to leave a task unfinished for three months. I'm not even sure what I was thinking. My boss certainly had a right to be upset with me. Usually, though, my boss forgives and forgets pretty quickly; by the end of the day, everything between us is back to normal. But not this time. Even though I did finally finish what he asked of me, I think he doesn't trust me at all anymore.

It's very difficult to gauge how he feels now. We haven't had a chance to go to lunch together all week (maybe he doesn't want to, or maybe he's just been busy), and our communication has been minimal. Our after-work meetings are brief and contain no friendly banter. He was out of the office for two and a half days on a business trip, and I had almost no contact with him (usually he at least calls or emails me to ask if everything is okay). I really feel like he's giving me the cold shoulder, only talking to me when it's absolutely necessary for work.

It's been kind of a rough week. With the economy having one of its worst weeks ever, my sales have been down. That coupled with my strained relationship with my boss makes for a very stressful work environment. I'm really not looking forward to tomorrow morning.

The technology role at any company can be a tough one. It is truly one of the most demanding roles within many organizations regardless of the company's size. This blog post is for the people not in the technology group looking to understand tech teams better or for technology folk seeking some innovative ways to address an age old problem...recruiting.

There are issues common to all teams/groups within a company. However there are some distinct differences that make technology more challenging than most roles within an organization. Some quick points.

While the training, rules and knowledge that most positions in a company require to be successful are fairly standard, technology is a totally different beast. For example: a sales team is pretty much a sales team. Basic skills are transferable, and you're either good or you aren't. The same can be said of customer support, accounting and host of other positions common to business.

When hiring for one of these positions, good people can still be difficult to find. However, a sizeable pool of good people usually exists to pull from since basic training and qualifications are standard.

Technology requirements in organizations are always changing. While the basics usually apply across the board, each company has its unique application of technology for its business needs, executive quirks, funding and dozens of other factors. The tech professional must navigate all of these.

Serving basic technology needs for a small company is relatively easy since most company usually have common requirements to function when they are small. As the company grows, it gets much more interesting.

In the beginning, "generalist" skills are needed. This usually means the company hires "jack of all trades" people. A jack of all trades is very versatile and serves the company well early on since they are usually able to handle a multitude of varying requirements with an knack for learning different skills. Basic technology needs are met.

As the company grows, it begins to see the need for "specialists" meaning personnel that have a specific skillset and 80% of the time they are focused job functions that level that skillset. The strength of the specialist is they normally have a drive for excellence and a higher capacity in their specialty than a generalist. The drawback of a specialist is that while they have a high capacity for accomplishment within their field, they generally lack the ability to bridge the gap with other required skillsets to accomplish the company's goals. Hence the need for a generalist or project manager.

For example
Generalist duties: Programming, server management, ecommerce, email marketing, graphics.

Specialist 1: graphic/creatives
Specialist 2: programmers
Specialist 3: pay per click marketing
Specialist 4: analytics
etc.

This brings us to the the real challenge and the purpose of the post. Recruiting.

Good tech generalists and specialists can be difficult to find. Many companies follow a "butts in seat rule" and it amazes me how many people get hired after just one interview. I believe the number of interviews someone goes through before they are hired is reflective of the importance the company places on finding quality people and how protective they are of their company's culture. This model usually results in constant turnover caused by poor leadership lacking clear vision for how technology benefits the business. It is quite common for the executives in this setting to see technology as a "necessary evil" thereby ensuring that the company's technology needs and funding are never adequately met.

Company's that place a high value on protecting their company's culture leverage a heavy investment on finding and screening the best people into their organization. Here's a brief rundown of our interview process minus a few steps for length.

Application questionnaire (questions about basic company familiarty, basic culture, skillset overview)

Skillset survey

Code/portfolio submission

Phone interview - describe your typical week on a personal and professional level

In person interview with direct supervisor (includes meeting with co-workers/team)

Personality profile / budget (relative to our culture)

HR interview

VP/Department Leader Interview

References called

Executive VP Interview

Here's a quick overview of some of things we are doing to recruit.

Employment listing on our website (primary driver of applications)

Posting on various specialty websites...mixed results (authenticjobs.com, joelonsoftware.com, dice.com)

Posting on common sites (monster.com, careerbuilder.com)

Posting on craigslist.com (best results of websites)

Listing in local special classifieds

College/university relationships with department heads

Specialty bi-fold business cards that contains: technology overview, company culture, free product offer to introduce people to our brand

$250 referral bonus for employee

In addition to the above, we've implemented a few things to introduce the industry to our team.

for the designers, a team portfolio of the work they've done including web, print, video media

for the programmers: a team video with interviews from our team

for the programmers: a team blog maintained by several of our programmers/tech leader

make contacts with other industry professionals and arrange speaking opportunities for our internet leadership team

Upcoming things we will be trying

Presence at large technology events like Adobe Max

Open sourcing some of our code to build a reputation in the industry

Recruiting for a technology team is no easy task. Finding top talent is difficult. Finding top talent that fits your company's culture is even more challenging.
