I am never fond of beauty pageants until one day my sister in a conversation told me that our representative for the Miss World Pageant might bring to the country more laughs than smiles. She hypothesized this due to her Q&A answer to win the title (video attached above). I watched the video before, and was speechless.

On one of our breakfast talks, my sister then told that she resigned due to some personal problems and that the death of her grandfather was so unbearable that it is imperative that she quit.

Oh well, her family are the most important persons in her life, as she said in the interview.

Well, I just hope that we stop speaking a foreign tounge if we are at heart Filipinos, for the mind is sometimes bashful of what our hearts would really want to convey."

Miss Danielle Castano, the US born runner now fills in for Ms. San Miguel as our representative for the Miss World Pageant. I wish her the best and hopes to date you in the most possible future.

"The most important issue here is not whether who is the representative of the country for the pageant, for on the top of my head... I am thinking will it possible for me to marry a beauty queen? Ramadan Ends
The Holy month of Ramadan officially ended Monday evening with the appearance of the new moon. Apparently, Malacañang miscalculated and erred in the declaration of a holiday. So while Muslims rejoice in celebrating Eid'l Fitr today, Christians will rejoice over another non-working day tomorrow.

Ramadan Ends II
Instead of Tuesday, Malacañang declared Wednesday a holiday in celebration of Eid'l Fitr. When it comes to declaring holidays, palace officials never run out of surprises. So watch out! We might just celebrate Christmas on November 1!

The most controversial Bb. Pilipinas title holder, Janina San Miguel has backed out from her official duties as the country's representative to the Ms. World Pageant.

I was one of those who "questioned" her good faith because i think and feel that she did not deserve it. The organizers said:

"The untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress, thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title... BPCI wishes to express its gratitude to Ms. San Miguel for this act of graciousness and concern for the country. They also wish her well in her future endeavors."

Hmmm.. i wonder what really happened... It seems that she can't take the pressure.. Or maybe there's someone who convinced her to quit.

And so, Danielle Castano, the first runner up, will now be given the opportunity get a glimpse of what it feels to be on top.

I read reports that she was the crowd favorite during the pageant.

"The death of her grandfather has caused her undue stress and she feels that it will hinder her from fulfilling her duties," Binibining Pilipinas Charities Foundation Director Stella Araneta said.

Janina will be replaced by her first runner-up Danielle Castaño. She will leave on November 18 to compete in Miss World 2008 in South Africa on December 7.

*sighs*

It's true. Bb. Pilipinas World 2008 Janina San Miguel has just announced last night that she's resigning as the country's representative in the upcoming Miss World 2008. Because of that, Bb. Pilipinas 1st runner up Danielle Castaño will be replacing her in the pageant.

According to the news, the reason for Janina's resignation is the recent death of her grandfather.

“The untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress, thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title," the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) statement read.

The Coronation of Miss World 2008 will be held on the 13th of December at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa.

**************************

Anyway, I was really disappointed to hear that Janina will no longer be representing our country in the Miss World 2008 pageant. I was really looking forward on how well she has improved since the last time I watched her on television.

I was even so eager and interested to see her prove herself to the world...

Haaay... I guess I won't be able to satisfy my curiosity now. If she's gonna mess up or not. But honestly I still wish her well.

I just hope that she doesn't grieve and stress herself too much. My condolences to you and your family too. Life doesn't end on the loss of a loved-one. A lot of good things still await you. May you be able to recover and move on soon. :-)

Driven by the desire to achieve her goals, the country’s official representative to the 57th Miss Universe pageant proves to be a woman fueled with confidence by faith.

Jennifer Barrientos, the country’s reigning Binibining Pilipinas-Universe, is more than a stunning combination of beauty and brains. While a commanding presence at 5 feet 8 inches, she exudes an aura of enlightenment, brought about by being active in her local church ministry as a youth leader. But she also attributes some lessons in faith from her experience as a beauty queen.

“Joining Binibining Pilipinas taught me lessons in faith as well—faith in myself, in the things I can do for others, how I can make a difference,” she enthuses with a charming smile. Jennifer also claims that she values her Binibining Pilipinas experience as it teaches her different values by the day, as she goes about performing her various duties as a reigning queen. “Most importantly, I have learned a great deal about being independent, how to effectively do things on my own,” she adds.

The eldest child of Nestor and Elena Barrientos, Jennifer is always eager to meet new people and hone her talents. She unwinds by engaging in water sports and playing volleyball. Jennifer had previously worked as a Welcome Ambassador for the Star World Hotel in Macau after earning her BS Tourism degree from the University of Santo Tomas. Now she divides her time between her church duties and being a freelance model, and of course, training as the official Philippine representative to the Miss Universe pageant to be held at the Crown Convention Center in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008.

Jennifer is one of the three Binibining Pilipinas 2008 title holders crowned recently, together with fellow queens Patricia Fernandez (Binibining Pilipinas International) and Janina San Miguel (Binibining Pilipinas World). Known as the country’s most prestigious pageant with four decades of glorious existence, Binibining Pilipinas is responsible for sending the official Philippine representatives to the three different international pageants recognizing beauty and the campaign for various causes worldwide.

“I intend to pursue the ongoing campaign for awareness on HIV and AIDS,” Jennifer answers when asked about her plans for advocacy. She also adds that she intends to focus on the rights of women and children as well as the development of the arts, particularly music. “I would want to pursue advocacies close to my heart as I believe I will be more productive promoting these causes,” she justifies.

Jennifer radiates true Filipina beauty inside and out, as she achieves her goals by the day driven by the strength of her faith. She is indeed out to do her country proud as she competes in one of this year’s most anticipated beauty pageants featuring the most beautiful women in the universe.

According to a recent interview to Jennifer at a local network, she is confident that she will be able to bring home the crown in the coming Miss Universe pageant to be held at the Crown Convention Center (Diamond Bay Resort) in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008[2] where outgoing titleholder Riyo Mori will crown her successor. 80 contestants are expected to compete in the event[3] which will be broadcast via NBC to TV outlets in more than 180 countries.
Isabel Martin, President of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP), opined that Filipinos

Isabel Martin, President of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP), opined that Filipinos seem to fear the English language. She cited the "nosebleed" jokes and extreme legislative measures that tend to make English the primary, or even the sole, medium of instruction as evidences that indeed, the Filipino people, in general, is afraid of the Western language.

I cannot disagree with this expert opinion. I think that Pinoys, actually, tend to fear the language because they think that it is something superior than the Filipino language. It is somehow a kind of slave mentality because of our nation's history of colonialism. This belief has two directions; it suggests that English is something that we shouldn't try because we're not capable of mastering it while the other tendency directs us to study English in order to become superior.

Even worse is the other extreme of it which is false nationalism as indicated by some Filipinos' assertion that speaking English is tantamount to betraying the country. I have to admit that I am amused every time I watch Jimmy Santos's carabao English on TV but this kind of humor actually contributes to the problem. Erap, during his pre-presidential campaign binge actually capitalized on his supposed English-baluktot which seems not to be really true or was just bloated to support his masa image and his para sa mahirap slogan.

English should be treated just like any other language. It should be used when necessary and should not be forced when not.

Ateneo Professor Nanette Fernandez has an interesting piece about this topic. The founder of the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching said that Philippine English has its distinct and acceptable characteristics like the use of certain phrases that purists might consider as incorrect like "cope up with".

I must add that Philippine English has different definitions for certain words (like "traffic" and "salvage") and even has words that only Filipinos seem to use (like "ballpen" or "ref").

The concept of countries having their own 'nativized' versions of English should be propagated so as not to drive away Filipinos from learning it the easier way. Not unless you work in a call center or any other industry that requires immediate communicative understanding, learning American or British or Australian English should not be forced.

It is sad to note that when the Janina San Miguel-incident happened, a lot of people bashed the beauty queen regarding her wrong grammar and pronunciation instead of the apparent non-sense that she blabbered right there at the pageant where she supposedly won. More insulting is the fact that some of those who lambasted San Miguel in Youtube even has a grammar worse than Janina.

I do think that the aim to improve English, both as individuals or as a nation, will always be a good thing to do if it is founded upon the principle of greater understanding and social progress and not on the assertion and imposition of who is the greater and who is the lesser.

1. Gretchen Baretto - Actress/professional fight picker/ “singer”. You can’t sin

1. Gretchen Baretto - Actress/professional fight picker/ "singer". You can't sing! Please stop trying! Tony's billions didn't help you so nothing can! Spare our ears! They "keep bleeding... keep2x bleeding love."

2. Kris Aquino - TV Host/Actress/attention whore. Seriously, ABS-CBN should just replace The Buzz with The Kris. I don't know anyone who is more self-obssessed than this one. They should just let her interview herself one of these days. Her insufferable antics are enough to make one wish the Marcoses had prevailed. Faker than a box of plastic bags, I love how she exploits her personal crises to get what she values most in life: attention! Can you say Histrionic Personality Disorder? Me me me me.

3. Ruffa Guttierez and her mother. - Actress/Fmr. Beauty Queen/International______? - You just can't get any faker than this one. You get snubbed by some woman because she thought you ran around with her husband back in the day and you have your "classy" mother bitch about it on national television! Just how old are you missy?! Hopefully old enough to realise that the look you had on TV Patrol just didn't work for you. You're starting to look a lot like a drag queen. And please, "winning" 2nd runner up in some god-forsaken beauty pageant is hardly anything to harp about, nor does it qualify you to give advice. Did that gramatically-challenged girl even ask you for one? Nobody even remembers who won when you competed, let alone who came in 1st or 2nd runner up. Oh and remind me.. what year was it again?

4. Richard Gomez - Actor/Failed politician/Has-been - Did you really think that Filipinos were THAT stupid to elect another intellect-deprived actor to public office? You have way too many political opinions. I just wish you could substantiate them with real facts. Maybe then, I'll have more respect for you. Not!

5. Dolphy - Actor/Comedian - Slapstick comedy died with Chaplin and The 3 Stooges. Not only is hitting people (especially lesser known/paid actors) with tsinelas no longer funny, but it is also downwright INHUMANE and just incredibly barbaric. This isn't Ancient Egypt; slavery is so passe and so is physical cruelty.

6. Willie Revillame - TV Host/Alleged game show cheat and wife beater/ Tearless cryer- Dude, stop acting like you're so generous and that you sympathise with the poor contestants on your show. It's NOT YOUR MONEY you're giving away! It's the network's and the sponsors' and you get a whole lot more for doing it!

7. Sexbomb Girls - Softcore porn dancers/ "actresses" - Please just stick to gyrating your hips. Nobody really wants to see you act or hear you talk about your group issues. Thats not what people are paying to see. Gets?

8. Janina San Miguel - Beauty Queen/Murderer of the English Language - Please don't apologise for being nervous and lying about it. Everyone gets nervous and everybody lies. Apologise for having parents who didn't encourage you to study harder because you were pretty and for hanging around too much in the cafeteria instead of taking that English Elective class in high school.

9. Regine Velasquez - Singer/Actress - Please, we already know you can hit those high notes. Now please return to ACTUALLY singing. If you call yelling out Mariah Carey songs at the top of your lungs every chance you get music, then our neighbours' dog's wailing is the height of operatic art. You sound better in Filipino originals! And if you sing them enough, maybe you'd influence your copycatting minions to do the same and Filipino songwriters would be encouraged to write more songs and we can have AUTHENTIC OPM music again, not rehashed or rearranged versions of old songs from the West. Urgh!

10. Karen Davila - "Journalist" - Can you imagine Christiane Amanpour crying over a dead presidential candidate's widow's ranting? Katie Couric or Meredith Vieira perhaps? I wonder where she got her journalism degree. Have you ever heard of JOURNALISTIC OBJECTIVITY? (fairness, disinterestedness, factuality, nonpartisanship ring a bell?) Just pathetic.

If you think other Pinoy celebs are more annoying than these folks or know others who are just generally annoying, please feel free to nominate them.

March has been really a mad and crazy month for me! It became synonymous to words such as fun, friends, enjoyment, adventure and accomplishments. So I thought of creating a post that will mainly discuss on things I've been busy with, events, occasions and personalities that made an impact on my life, my family's and some others too for the past thirty one days. Sounds too serious eh, but the ideas I had since last night were all funny and unserious haha! Impact may sound a little bit too heavy but I think I would include some events that the whole Philippines and probably the whole world too are aware of for the past month. Politics? Nah. I don't think I will be touching politics this time (or ever)hehe. New updates on gadgets or what's hot in technology is also interesting, but I am not that much updated when it comes to those. Probably if finally I'd be able to provide a new cutting edge laptop or the newest hip mobile phone for myself. But what I will be discussing below are just simple things that brings joy to simple human beings like me haha! Those that made my month, a sort of recap. On how well it went. I will be doing this every month, and there'd be a yearly thing too haha.. So, to start things off..

The early summer fever. I have spent the first week of the month beachin! Of course, the Galera getaway tops this list of recapitulation. I won't go into details anymore since I have already posted two of the 3-part series regarding that haha! It was a good way to start the summer, and it looks like I'll be beachin for more the entire season (number of plans from friends are piling up as I compose this entry). And just after an awesome Galera weekend, I went swimming with some friends and the twins tagging along. It has been a yearly thing for that group of friends of mine to go swimming during holy week, and we're three years running. We chose to go to Bulacan this time, since we've exhausted all the resorts in Montalban haha! The next beach/swimming escapades will take place next month with yet other group of friends.

At Club Royale, Malolos Bulacan

Malubay on American Idol top 12. This is the month where the final 12 finalists were revealed after several weeks of battling it out on the semi-finals. And this is the time where our very own Ramiele Malubay also made it to the most coveted list! The whole country raved, along with the Filipino community in the US. But our girl's first two weeks at the finals had been rough. She's been getting not-so-good comments from the judges because of the equally not-so-good performances she's giving. You don't wanna know how some online people are bashing and picking on her on forums! It's baaad! Anyway, I just hope she'll start defining herself as an artist and pick songs that will really showcase her amazing singing voice. Goodluck, Ramie! I still love you no matter what they say hehe..

The Ken Lee craze! My oh my, never had I been so addicted to youtube til came Ken Lee! hahaha.. The first time I watched her now-so-famous 4million+ hits video, I just couldn't stop laughing! Even my twin brothers and my mom nearly ran out of breath. Her voice kept on singing in my head, i tell yah! My friends and my boss had the same story haha. And the next thing you know, she's already on the news and became an instant sensation! We just can't get enough of Ken Leeeee!!

Pacman & Janina. Another victory for our Manny Pacquiao indeed! I haven't seen the fight because I am at work. Some say that it was "cooked" (luto! haha), but just the same, it was another winning moment for him during Philippine politics trying times. He was then coined as PGMA's savior, because he always converts the public's attention everytime the President is facing major political issues. And then came Janina San Miguel, a 17 year old runaway winner of this year's Binibining Pilipinas whose answer to the pageant's final question made a big noise and controversy. She's now the country's favorite laughing stock, the subject of all this ridiculuos email and text jokes circulating around. But what this girl Janina didn't know is that she actually made a lot of people realize that all of us, especially the youth nowadays, should focus and practice more on our vocabulary and speaking skills. And the more revealing truth here is that the quality of English education students are getting now has become poor and really bad.

A freshie no more! My twin brothers really enjoyed their first year in school, my alma mater San Francisco High School. They both are part of the special section and are active members of the school's most prestigious program, Special Program for the Arts. Joshua is in Theater Arts, while Jeremiah is in Dance Academy. I remember during enrollment time when they were both hesitant to enroll because most of their elementary friends are in a different school. But now, they seem to have found more friends and extremely enjoying being part of the school's special section. Joshua, as a neophyte in theater, is actually doing good in his acting. We've watched their school plays and mom and I agreed he has the makings of a good theater actor. Because of that, he received two medals commending his good performance! Jeremiah, on the other hand, seems to love dancing now and has lost weight because of everyday rehersals for shows. He also got high grades, but failed to make it on the Top 10, even if he got an average of 91%, because competition is too stiff on a special section. So, now that they're awaiting their sophomore year, I bet it will be more exciting and fun for them!

Triple Treat! Just recently, two of my friends LT & Mei had a joint birthday celebration. And since a friend of ours (Arden aka Alpha of Radio1) is graduating from college, our get together also became his post-graduation bash! A night of three occassions! We had fun three times over! We met over at Trinoma, had dinner at Gerry's and of course coffee conversations after. I was short of cash that day, so I planned on going without any gift for them. But thanks to Imkimi, an online portal where you can do fun stuff to your photos, I then thought of a last minute gift and made them a personalized card with our pictures on it! Thank God they loved it hehe.. And what better way to do this blog entry than doing it today, the actual day of Mei's birthday and Arden's graduation! I actually made it a point to do it today haha.. Cheers, mah friends!!

So that's how I spent and enjoyed the March that was. And from the looks of my upcoming April schedule, it would be more exciting! I'll be meeting up with some elementary classmates at Pampanga, get together with some present & previous workmates, and go to my birthplace Cagayan De Oro City! Yey! I just hope that it will all sail smoothly and everything will work out according to planned. Have a great summer vacation to all!

This song drove me crazy. I was in an Isarog single-seater bus. The bus has just arrived at the Naga City terminal when this song aired over the bus' speakers. This song is the reason why the porters looked at me strangely and gave me a very wide berth. Who wouldn't? I had on a sappy yet evil-looking smile on my face when I finally disembarked. The porters must have thought I was going to pull a knife from somewhere and turn on them any minute.

There has been a few Filipinos catching limted world attention lately courtesy of the internet marv

There has been a few Filipinos catching limted world attention lately courtesy of the internet marvel YouTube. Arnel Pineda becoming Journey's lead vocalist, Charice Pempengco guesting at a popular US TV show and the Philippines being credited as the origin of the new dance craze Papaya.

Randomly check the comments on the videos and you'll see praises in various forms and level but with all practically proudly proclaiming the world-class and unmatched talent of the Filipinos.

And this is where the problem lies. Or this is where the issue is. At least to me, I believe.

I have no argument with Filipino talent. It is patent and proved. It is how this talent, so abundant and so rich, is used and where it has brought now us as a people that perplex me. If we are truly a talented people, why are we so behind other countries who do not have a Pempengco, a Pineda, or a Salonga, or beauty queens, or boxing champs?

Sadly, our claim to fame and world-class talents is matched only at home by massive poverty, repression, and mass exodus of workers.

We sing praise in unison to a copycat singer yet remain dumb and deaf to a stealing and murdering illegal president. We marvel at a high-notes-hitting-Dion-Houston- wannabe- teenager's guesting in an American television yet remain cold and indifferent to the abduction of a press freedom icon.

We take pride in having all these so-called world class entertainers who continuously ape foreign artists but we haven't developed our own music. I would like to think of how Bob Marley and reggae music of tiny Jamaica has contributed for example.

We claim to have a chef in the White House yet we cannot even have mainstream restaurants in the US despite the fact other nationalities who have lesser population have managed to do so, like the Thais, the Greeks and even the Afghans.

We pride ourselves on being the best care-givers and nurses, a sad tale that is a different story by itself and requires a different page, yet our people's health resembles that of a sickbed.

We insist on using the English language, no matter how ridiculous we may sound and appear (take a bow Janina San Miguel) arguing it is the passport to success and progress, when all it has given our people are call centers and not real industrialization.

We claim to be the home of the world's most beautiful women for having beauty contest title holders when this only perhaps speeds up further the global traffic of our women.

We are the origin of People Power yet we are ruled by a fake, criminal, corrupt and lying president.

Our world class talent rings hollow and our claims to fame fall flat in the face of stark realities.

Quo vadis my countrymen?

This has got to be one of the most painful videos I've ever seen. And mind you, it has little to do with Janina San Miguel's weak attempt at English. At least the girl tried, so let her be. Melanie Marquez must be this 17 year old's idol, for all we know.

Actually, it would be imprudent to equate intelligence with broken English. Nowadays, people seem to think highly of themselves whenever they could speak straight English when in fact, these so-called PINOYS cannot even speak straight Tagalog and worse, they prefer to speak TAG-LISH instead. Most of the pa-sosyal people and kids do that most of the time and that's more irritating. Have these people not been taught at school that you speak one language at a time if you want clarity and cohesion? If you want to speak in English, then speak in straight English and vice versa with Tagalog. You do not add and mix these two languages to make it seem like your cool and hip and smart. It makes you look cheap and maarte, actually. But of course, not all good English-speaking Pinoys are like that and it would be stupid of me to make such a generalization.

To be honest, to be able to speak in English is essential because as we seek to move towards globalization, this language will help us gain the upper hand in getting a job or a career basically. I think it would be safe to equate good education or sufficient education with good English skills instead. Because not all well-educated, good English speaking people are intelligent, right? Some receive good education because they can afford it. But intelligence is rarely developed as it is mostly based in your genes. So some who receive good education and speak perfect English may not necessarily have the brains to think beyond speaking perfect English. Some.

Actually, you just need practice, patience and the will to do it. If you're not good at something, then practice! I am not good at math (and chem and physics and statistics etc, etc, etc) so what I do is solve the practice exercises or problems that our profs usually give and pester them during their consultation hours. I am good at memorizing stuff (hence my biology course) so once I see a pattern in solving, I memorize that pattern and I apply that to similar problems. Frankly, my brain is not well trained to analyze numbers that's why understanding the math (physical sciences) theories and concepts are not enough in my case. Know your strengths and use it. Get you ass moving, do something to improve yourself and stop being lazy.

Another thing that bothers me is that why did the judges let Janina San Miguel win? Because being able to speak in English is an entirely different thing to being intelligent. She could have answered the question in Tagalog. But then again, could speaking in Tagalog saved Janina San Miguel's ass from ridicule? It would have if she had a truly intelligent answer lurking inside her head. In the end, I see the dysfunction in the pageant itself. And I agree with Ruffa Guttierez, that physical beauty and brains should come together in competitions like these. Blame the judges for putting you on the spot, Janina. If you did not win the crown, then perhaps the critics would not be this harsh on you. You could use an interpreter in the Q&A portion in the Miss World Pageant, you know, if those speech lessons cannot help you.

On a happy note (if you can call it that), here are Dense Modesto's dance remixes of the two clips above. His sarcasm in doing these videos (he also did the Saging Lang ang may Puso Remix feat. Mark Lapid) has a way of putting lessons in my head. Enjoy lang. :)

I'm proud to be Filipino but this is something that needs to be erased from the record books forever. Ms. South Carolina did it in Miss Teen USA 2007 and this time around Janina San Miguel does it for Miss Philippines. Expect this video to stay viral at least for the next couple of weeks.

I recently heard the news that Harry Potter 7, the last installment of the Harry Potter movie series, will be divided into two parts. The first part will be shown on December 2010, while the second part will be on May 2011. I haven't finished the novel yet, but I heard from my classmates and friends that the last book is really full of important events, and it is really impossible to fit it in a 2-hour movie. It is much better this way, and I'm really excited about it.

Colby Caillat in Manila

I had the chance to see Colby Caillat performing live in Manila. In case you didn't know, Colby Caillat is the voice behind the hit 'Bubbly' and "Realize'. My classmates and me went to Trinoma last March 12 to see her mall tour in Ayala malls. It was quite a long wait, and we really felt the starvation while waiting for her. And when the show started, we just listened to two songs and decided to leave our place and have our dinner. At least, we saw her, that's what matters.

David Hernandez being booted out in American Idol

I'm really disappointed with the result of American Idol last week. David Hernandez, one of the best male vocals in the competition, was voted off in the competition. I personally think that he is not the weakest performer that night, and I truly believe that he deserve to be in the top 5. There was news that it might be because of the rumors about his 'stripper' past. But that was unfair for him. But anyway, I think he will still emerge in the Music Industry.

Binibining Pilipinas

Unfortunately, I catch this show in the television. And I really find it hilarious. And I'm really surprised that she won the title. Personally, I'm not against the contestant. It is okay with me if she messed up in the question and answer portion. I'm not saying that she don't deserve to win. But the only point is there are other contestants who really deserve it. Anyway, let us just wish her luck. :)

Nihongo play, a success

Whootwoot. I'm very happy that our play in Nihongo class was a success! And because of the good flow of the story and the great performances of my group, we emerged as the best group! It was really fulfilling. And I'm happy that it was already finished.

End of classes

aww... this is the end of our college days. And I really feel happy and sad at the same time. I will miss my classmates, and all the treasured memories we shared together inside and outside the school. I won't forget them... I will miss you guys! Till next time! :(
