"Beloved Cherokees," wrote President Washington on AUGUST 29, 1796,

I now send my best wishes to the Cherokees and pray the Great Spirit to preserve them."

On May 12, 1779, Washington addressed the Delaware Indian Chiefs at the Middle Brook military encampment:

"Brothers: I am glad you have brought three of the Children of your principal Chiefs to be educated with us...Congress...will look upon them as their own Children."

Washington continued:

"This is a great mark of your confidence and of your desire to preserve the friendship between the Two Nations...and to become One people with your Brethren of the United States...

You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are."

Washington concluded:

"Congress will do everything they can to assist you in this wise intention; and to tie the knot of friendship and union so fast, that nothing shall ever be able to loose it...

I pray God He may make your Nation wise and strong."

[gallery]

Second day. Philadelphia. Now also with tomatoes ;-). (ok...; inside joke)

Well... a lot of people told us we could as well skip Philly instead of loosing time, but we would like to spread a different word. Philadelphia is a truly lovely city. Not only because of what there is to see, but mostly because of a lot of nice people, bars and restaurants. Of course we only had dinner at one restaurant, but we saw a lot of trendy places.

This was also the first complete day in the States and we noticed only today how proud and patriotic Americans still are. Not in a bad way, although it sometimes really goes over the top. Especially because every guide might tell you that his spot is the most important or the biggest in the whole world. But that's all part of the game and has it's charms (in a way).

But back to Philadelphia. During the day we walked across town to see some important milestones in American history and for the second day in a row we walked miles and miles. To live the history, we went for diner in City Tavern which serves dinner in historic uniforms and atmosphere. A delicious way to end our day...

Good night.
