Since I’m new to WordPress.com… I thought that maybe I should write a short introduction

Since I'm new to WordPress.com... I thought that maybe I should write a short introduction?
I'll put more details on the About page if I manage to get off my lazy hour today =D

About me

I'm a half-Chinese and half-Filipino. So yeah, that makes me a 'Chinay'. I'm not living in China right now and I'm not planning to go there for a while. I'm the second youngest among us siblings. Not exactly a great thing but it's better than being the youngest. Besides, my family's great and I wouldn't have it any other way ;D

About Psychology

" Psychology is an academic and applied discipline involving the phenomenological and scientific study of mental processes and behavior. "

I know, I know, I'm only just in high school but I'm really interested in being a psychologist. I mean... I want to help those people with... you know. And no, I won't take up medicine because I can't stay calm when I see organs or flesh, things like that. I'm not as brave as other people, I only pretend that I am.

About Web Designing & Graphics Making

I LOVE being creative when it comes to web designing.

It's inspiring for me to see gorgeous layouts in some websites that fits very well. Especially when the theme and the color scheme blends together perfectly! X3

I'm helping out on some forums and other sites regarding web designing. I may not be called a 'Professional' yet but I won't let anyone get disappointed in me.

Except, of course, when I don't have any muses yet to motivate me when doing my given share of work. It's very hard when you don't feel like doing it nor do you have the inspiration at all, don't you think?

Graphics Making.

Okay, that's another hobby if I'm in the mood. Layouts, glitters, overlay, etc. They're pretty easy actually ;D

Where do I get inspiration?

Where you say? Well, almost anywhere. I usually get inspired by a pairing (mostly non-canon), a manga, an anime or a story from FF.net. If a muse visits me in a form of a video, then the video becomes my inspiration. What's a muse? It's just inspiration :D

The hard part is... even if I DO get motivated, it's not a guarantee that it'll last long enough until I finish the given project and if the muse leaves me, there is a definite risk that the project would not be continued at all. EVER.

That's about it, I guess.... THE END! :D

Looking around, again for inspiration I found VandelayDesign blog. In a recent blog they had a post entitled "25 Incredibly Artistic Websites" The site discusses trends what works, and why, and the comments posted are most often by people who have a reasonable professional approach to design.

The whole approach to the blog was about sharing what works in design and why this might be so. It was not incredibly technical and had some great examples of website (and blog) design. It would be a great site to show visual arts students, for example, different creative styles. Styles under headings such as minimilist, colourful, dark, incredibly artistic, church, unique and innovative Flash have interesting examples and comments/discussion.

So, I just applied to have my new site added to the BLL, and decided that there's need for some better logos. The mid and small sized logos are just kind of ugly, and even in the large one, the image of the bull is sort of pixelated. Shawn Wilbur has made some, but I wanted something simpler.

So, I made some logos for my use, but I'll share them here in case anybody else wants to use them. There are 150x150 and 100x100 images in .gif format, with a few color formats. I'm not much of a graphic artist, but here they are. I'm also thinking maybe I'll make some others that don't involve the totally random, inexplicable use of the bull (I can only presume the only correlation is the close spelling between BLL and bull?). Also, the BLL ring site has 50x50 images, but I didn't make any because that seems too small to be useful. But, if you want me to come up with something 50x50, let me know.

[gallery]

If you wish to use these graphics, you may do whatever you want with them as far as I'm concerned (I used public domain stock from here). However, please do not hotlink!

Created with The GIMP.

UPDATE: I've added 4 more images - two each of 150x150 and 100x100, with two different color schemes. These use the good old stand-in, ama-gi, as the thematic element, in case you don't dig the random bull thing.

UPDATE 2: Glancing over at Jeremy's blog, I got an idea. So, I've added two more utilizing the snake from the Gadsden flag.

UPDATE 3: (last update for the time being) Following a train of thought from Update 2, I decided to make another one using the famous "Join, or Die" cartoon. Fitting for the ideologically heterogeneous BLL, no?

While Diablo has always had a kind of a “gloomy” feeling to it, it never seemed to me as

While Diablo has always had a kind of a "gloomy" feeling to it, it never seemed to me as a scary game. Sure, it could scare a 6 year old, but more than that, no. I actually found the game rather humorous. But with the announcement of Diablo III and the subsequent gameplay video apparently angered some "hardcore fans" who think that the graphical improvement has ruined D3: http://www.petitiononline.com/d3art/petition.html. They have pointed out a number of things that is wrong with Diablo III.

"A darker, gothic, cryptic and creepier environment."

[wp_caption id="" align="alignleft" width="217" caption="Sun? In MY Diablo?"][/wp_caption]

Let's take a look at this particular screenshot for a second. What I see here is a nice outdoor environment with some zombies to hack away. Obviously the details have been turned down, anti-alias seems to be off and texture quality low, probably because the engine isn't optimised yet and would give a low FPS when presented and Blizzard World Wide Invitational.

But more importantly, what I see here is a autumn day/evening with colorful trees and sun shining. You know, the kind of thing you would expect from a real world. Colours...sun...water...foliage. But what do I know? I suppose Diablo III should have burned trees, dark green grass, permanent overcast with thunderstorms and most importantly - no sun! (They hate sun. http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l318/frostwake/Diablo31.jpg. Also, that screenshot has stirred up the hive because it has a rainbow on it ._.)

"Darker dungeons without a blue/green environment, Diablo dungeons are dark and shadowy."

Again, let's have a look: http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/_images/screenshots/ss16-hires.jpg. Nice blueish tint, beautiful environment, some statues, colourful Witch-Doctor. What's there not to like? I've read a number of posts that say these statues look weird and cute which is inconsistent with the theme of Diablo. But of course, there never were any humorous or cute monsters in Diablo II. Except for Vile Mother, Fetish/Shaman, Frog Demon, Scarabs etc. http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/_images/screenshots/ss25-hires.jpg. How dark do you want it to get? You can always turn down the brightness if you don't like it. I prefer to actually see the game I'm playing.

"The return of the light radius / shadow system from Diablo 1 and 2, a concept modified picture made by me roughly shows and suggests how the shadow system should work on Diablo 3: http://i31.tinypic.com/2zta5o7.jpg"

With all the effort put into the graphics, I'm sure the people at Blizzard want to show it, not hide in pitch-black darkness. If you want darkness, turn down the brightness. Dark atmosphere is good for games which are supposed to be scary like Doom 3 or F.E.A.R, providing the element of surprise. Darkness in Diablo III would be nothing more than a nuisance.

I ignored the rest of the points because most of them repeated themselves - "too colourful" in a different key. I found, however, one sentence quite funny. "And lastly here's a few concept pictures of how fans want Diablo 3 to be." Which fans? Do you mean those 33,000? Not to mention the fact that quite a few of them are believed to be signed using bots. Oh, I guess I did mention it. In comparison, I quote Wikipedia:

"As of August 29, 2001, Diablo has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide."

In three and a half years it sold 2.5 million copies. And now Diablo II figures? Of course:

"As of August 29, 2001, Diablo II has sold 4 million copies worldwide."

In one year, it sold 4 million copies. And not all of those who bought Diablo I also bought Diablo II, but for the sake of this, let's assume they did. So seven years ago there were 4 million Diablo II owners. Let's imagine that the amount has not risen. Let's also ignore those people who downloaded Diablo II instead of buying it and who are potential buyers. Currently (5th of July) there are 33985 signatures. So that's about 0.85% of the people who have bought Diablo II. I'm impressed. Blizzard is sure to take action.

Not to mention the fact that we have seen one inside and one outside area of (presumably) Act I. There is a simple solution for your problem - don't buy the game. Nobody is forcing you to spend money on it. And finally, learn to adapt. Blizzard made a bold move. Diablo is all about gameplay. I'd like to end with a quote.

"...and just sort of taking a step back and saying, "Gameplay is king, performance is second, and graphics are somewhere after that." People have said to us, you know, Portal is cool, but it wasn't the prettiest game. Well, okay, it sold a whole lot, it was named game of the year by over 30 outlets, and many of the people who played it told me they finished it and had a great time. I would much rather have that than have people tell me it was the prettiest game that came out last year."

- Doug Lombardi

It's been months since I played a computer game (if I don't include the hour or so I spent with the Spore Creature Creator Demo that has encouragingly shown that my ThinkPad might be up to handling the full game). I decided to update my Sims 2 with the latest Free Time patch. This crippled the program's initiator but gladly, this is a known issue and was fairly easily resolved via this procedure --->

http://www.simprograms.com/?p=654

I re-encountered the bizarre graphics problem where the game screen is set off-centre. As my Refresh Rate was already at the maximum setting of 75, I had to mess about with the ATI Panel controls. I ticked the box for "Composite Sync". I don't know what it means - but the game picture is now correctly positioned......and there's STILL snow on the ground in Pleasantville.

If you’re looking for a free drawing and graphic application to test your creative skills, then D

If you’re looking for a free drawing and graphic application to test your creative skills, then DrawPlus 4 will fill the bill admirably.

With this free drawing and graphic package from Serif Software, you can turn out vector graphics, high-impact graphics, and even web animations with tools usually only available in high end applications.

DrawPlus 4 is a vector drawing program, much like the very expensive CorelDraw, which means the drawing is in editable layers. On top of that, DrawPlus is also a graphics design program that allows you to create logos, high quality print graphics, artwork, drawings, animations, labels and more.

The straightforward and intuitive interface is powerful yet simple, so that first time users, (like me – with no graphic skills), will get the professional quality results they want – fast! I’m told by friends that are users, that this program is great for making avatars; although I haven’t tried this myself.

If you like special effects, DrawPlus 4 is loaded with them, so it's easy to create high impact text for headlines, logos, banners, Web pages, or wherever your imagination takes you. You can add bitmap, conical, ellipse, plasma, radial and linear fills to your creations to produce spectacular results.

DrawPlus supports industry standard bitmap and vector formats including: JPEG, BMP, EMF, WMF and PNG for the Web.

Serif’s objective in releasing older versions of their current programs at no cost is to entice users to upgrade to current versions of their software. An interesting twist on the usual “try it for free for 30 days” we are all pretty familiar with.

I have used, and tested, Serif’s free editions for 10+ years now, and I have found that even their older software is more than up to the tasks I set.

Sure, the applications may be older than the current versions, but in terms of functionality and features, generally you are not missing much. In these older free versions there are not as many tools as one might find with more recent versions of Serif’s products, but those that are there, tend to be the ones that are most used by typical users.

Serif describes the features of DrawPlus 4 as follows:

Drawing & Sketching

Say goodbye to complicated tools and 'shaky hand' drawings. DrawPlus makes drawing simple with easy to use QuickShapes, Natural Curve Editing and Curve Smoothing.

Backdrop Wizard

Easily add abstract or themed backgrounds to your designs. From dazzling presentation backgrounds to outer-space style backdrops, start your drawings on a ready-made designer canvas.

Studio Resources

Choose from hundreds of pre-set lines, fills, transparencies, fonts and Wizard elements from the Studio tabs to save you time and still achieve amazing results.

Color Selection

Apply color fills to backgrounds, shapes and your own drawings from the simple on-screen studio palette.

Animation Mode

Bring your designs to life with the fun animation tools, which include easy-to-use, yet advanced features like onion skinning, backgrounds, overlays and frame management.

Blends

Use the blend tool to automatically 'morph' two images into one another. You choose the number of steps and let DrawPlus do the rest - easy!

Transparency

Easily create sparkling photo-like realism and quality in seconds with no experience required.

Watermark Wizard

A notoriously difficult effect to create is now a total breeze, with a wide range of customizable watermark designs on hand.

Border Wizard

Choose borders from the extensive library for your objects and pages or let the Border Wizard help you.

Color Schemes

Define new color sets as shades of a base color, and then simply apply your color scheme to your design instantly by editing the original base color.

Editable Envelopes

Stretch and squeeze objects or text into whatever shape you choose. Select from the range of special outline shapes or customize your own!

Text

Create high-impact text for headlines, logos, banners, web pages and more. Convert your text to curves to bring fonts to life.

File Size: 19 MB

License: Free

System Requirements: Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP

Giving it another try. This is a fake ad that I designed to teach myself graphics.

Don't tell me to take a class, read a book or invest hundreds of bucks.

I can't do that!

For once, I don't think the problem is operator-error.

Instead the problem is that my software is a cheap program. Maybe I will try my ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR.

Now I need to learn to keep the background the original white that I created. There's smaller type at the bottom that doesn't show up.

I just went through this tutorial on Lynda .com about making masks, layering, and selecting. It was time-consuming but it's only the icing on the cake I am sure. I can't post many graphics due to Lynda.Com's terms of service,; you have to subscribe. I am subscribing due to my class requirements but it's great!

I can tell you what we learned about channels and masks and selecting:We selected a woman's face and hair blowing in the wind in strands and then put a desert background behind it. We did this by creating a color range selection which is in the Select menu and then selecting an area of base color with the eyedropper tool when The Color Range Dialog box opens up. I am going to go over the color range command first, then tell the story of the selected woman.

The preview in the box is black and white: black means no pixels are selected, white means selections were made. Any gray areas are going to lack detail in your selection. The Color Range Dialog Box is quirky. It is not available for 32-bits-per-channel images, as it says in the help documentation.

The first color you click on is your base color. Add base colors by shift+clicking You remove colors by alt+clicking(Windows) or Option+Click(Mac). Selecting the eyedropper with the + sign adds to the selection, therefore the -sign deletes from the selection.Shift+click in the dialog box preview window as well. You are granted one undo (ctrl+Z) in the dialog box. The "Fuzziness" Slider is the amount of luminance levels you want to select when you click, similar to the tolerance levels. A higher number means a higher amount of colors you can select from 0-200, incrementally from the point you click. Select your base color before messing with the Fuzziness Slider. The "Fuzziness" value is different from tolerance in that it's selections are, "Organic," as Deke McClelland of Lynda.com says in his Tutorial: Photoshop CS3: Channels & Masks: The Essentials. I recommend you start with Photoshop CS3: One-on-One: The Essentials first, and finish the "One-on-One" Series if you're a beginner. What Deke means by Organic is that it partially selects pixels based on the settings in a relative way; It's not an absolute selection with jagged edges.

The color Range Command also selects "non-adjacent" pixels, unlike the Magic Wand Tool. You can invert the selection by checking the box under the "cancel" button. There are two radio buttons at the bottom of the preview window labeled "Selection" and "Image": Selection shows you the mask it's creating and Image shows the full color image in the preview window.

[wp_caption id="attachment_28" align="aligncenter" width="344" caption="Color Range Dialog Box PS CS3"][/wp_caption]

When you click "OK" it generates a marching ants selection the is actually just a 50% representation of your selection. In order to view your selection, you have to create a channel mask/alpha channel by clicking on the mask button (the one that is a square with a circle in the middles) on the bottom of the Channels Palette and it generate a channel mask. View this by turning off the other channels and then make a selection and a mask with the wand and compare the masks and you can see the difference in the selections. Use a Gradient Background to select an area with both and you'll see how the color range tool flows naturally with the gradient.

[wp_caption id="attachment_29" align="aligncenter" width="344" caption="Color Range With Selection of Colors "][/wp_caption]

By default, the Color range Command is set to use the foreground color set in your toolbar as the base color when you first open it, so if it is set to black the you will see black when the preview image opens up at first. You can change this by canceling out of the Color Range and choose the eyedropper tool and click in your background color of choice and click inside the foreground button on the bottom of the toolbar.

For a quick full color preview inside the preview of the dialog box, click+ctrl in the window. (just a handy tidbit).

The Selection Preview Drop-Down Menu allows you to preview your images in several ways:
1.Grayscale: 256 shades os grayscale in the main window.

2.Black Matte: Image against a Black matte background.

3. White Matte: Image against a Black matte background.

4.Quick Mask: Quick Mask Mode is a whole other topic, but it shows a rubylith overlay on your non-selected parts and the true colors on the selected in the main window.

The Drop-Down Menu at the top is the Color Range Selection Menu in which you can select a color range to create the selection from that automatically and you cannot edit the selection with these options. The "Out of Gamut" option only works with RGB and Lab images, and cannot be printed. BUT you can select one color range and then click ok and save it and then go back in and sample or choose another color range to add to the selection.

[wp_caption id="attachment_30" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Color Graph"][/wp_caption]

Right click and copy the image above and save it as .jpeg in photoshop. Use the select drop-down menus and view each one and you can see what colors it selects. This color wheel is all the RGB and CMYK colors together, 60 degrees apart. The colors toward the center gray out and lose their saturation. The select menu has all the colors on the wheel plus highlights, midtones, and shadows. Don't forget "Out-of-Gamut"! which cannot print. It's nice for analysing purposes but I haven't had a use for them yet.

Using the Color Range Command you can make a lot of great selections which you may have go in and refine, but it is a far better way to select than any other method.

Once you've made your selection, with it active you can click on the mask button on the Channels Palette and create a mask. There are several routes you can take from there. You could save your selection, which I recommend. Then you could enter Quick Mask Mode for more refinement, or use the refine edges command with a selection tool active(in the options bar is the button to refine edges).

If you want to get rid of the background completely you could load the selection and ctrl+drag to another background then hold shift before you let go of the mouse to align the images properly.OR

One could enter "Quick Mask Mode" by pressing the icon at the bottom of the toolbar that commonly represents masks throughout Photoshop, and then paint away the background you don't want using the paintbrush or by selecting areas and pressing delete or backspace. The selection could be made with many other tools, like the lasso, or the marquee tools, or even the quick select tool depending on your needs. The Quick Maks Mode is beyond this Post, I want to go into the selecting technique used I learned to select hair strands and make them look as natural as possible using The Channels Palette. See My next Post!
