The Apostle Paul, in both 1 Timothy 2:7 and 2 Timothy 1:11, says this amazing statement, “I was appointed a herald.” The Greek word for 'herald' is 'Keryx,' meaning 'proclaimer,' and furthermore, “to proclaim, tell, often urging acceptance of the message, with warning of the consequences for not doing so.”

Many years ago, in the villages of a kingdom, there where appointed town criers, also known as, 'town heralds,' who would loudly proclaim the message from the King. This was a huge honour, which shouldered a great deal of responsibility. It was a position of trust, to proclaim the message of the King to the people.

The Bible says in Daniel 3:4 (NIV), “Then the herald loudly proclaimed…” He loudly proclaimed to the people, instructions from the King. How much more should we be heralds of our great and awesome King? God has appointed every one of us to herald His message to the people. What an awesome position of trust, what an awesome responsibility to have, to be a herald of the good news, to proclaim the message from our great and awesome King, to the people.  

Is it any wonder then, that Charles Wesley wrote this great hymn?

Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King,
Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem !"
Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail th' incarnate Deity,
Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.
Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King!"

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.

For visiting guests, a box of Ferrero Rochers was often the accompanying gift. Nowadays, I can turn to any vending machine or grocery store shelf, and the chocolate is no longer an indulgence. It's an always-within-reach snack. Does that cheapen the experience? ~AH

Recently, a large airline suspended a member of staff for wearing a simple cross around their neck. It was a sign of their belief in Jesus, and they were not ashamed to wear it. Furthermore, a young girl was suspended from school for wearing such a cross. In both instances, they were suspended for what the authorities believed might have been, in some small way, offensive to someone. The Bible says in Romans 9:33 (KJV), “As it is written, ‘Behold, I lay in Sion a stumbling-stone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed’.” 

It is amazing to think that even today Christ Jesus and His crucifixion on the cross is an offence to a lot of people who do not believe. It is foolishness to the unbeliever and a stumbling block to the Jews. Some people would want us to water down the truth of God's word, to dilute the pure word of God, to stop preaching about the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, to brush over the cross of Calvary, and not preach such pure devotion to Jesus. Some of us would have Christ cheap, but the price of the cross will not come down. 

In the words of Isaac Watts, “Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small, Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.” 

The Apostle Paul says this in our text for today, 1 Corinthians 1:23 (NIV), “But we preach Christ crucified; a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.” We preach Christ crucified, and also His glorious resurrection from the dead. Only the undiluted, only the pure, powerful gospel will tell of the wonders of Calvary.  

Oh! The love that drew salvation’s plan. Oh! The grace that brought it down to man,

Oh! The mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary; Mercy there was great, was grace was free. Pardon there was multiplied to me, There my burdened soul found liberty, at Calvary. 

My friend, I, too, preach Christ crucified, I preach the gospel, the message of the cross just as the Apostle Paul who writes in Romans 1:16 (NIV), “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” For salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we much be saved. That name is the name of Jesus Christ, the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour of the world.

Well worth a read - or even a skim through!

Here's part of the section in which he deals with the forces of evil in the world, in particular in the death of Jesus (interestingly in this article he stops short of attributing 'natural disasters' to evil powers more generally):

The Gospels also tell the story in terms of the deeper, darker demonic forces which operate at a supra-personal level. These forces operate through all of the human elements I’ve mentioned, but cannot be reduced to terms of them. ... The stormy sea, the miniature but deadly tsunamis on Galilee, evoke ancient Israelite imagery of an evil which is more than the sum total of present wrongdoing and woe. “The power of darkness” to which Jesus alludes immediately before his betrayal suggests that on that night evil was being given a free rein to do its worst, with the soldiers, the betrayer, the muddle disciples and the corrupt court its mere instruments. The mocking bystanders as Jesus hangs on the cross (“If you are the son of God . . .”) echo the taunting, tempting voice that had whispered in the desert. The power of death itself, the ultimate denial of the goodness of creation, speaks of a force of destruction, of anti-world, anti-God power being allowed to do its worst. ...

Two other translations say this, (AMP) “He steadfastly and determinedly set His face to go to Jerusalem,” and (KJV) “He steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. Jesus was firm in His purpose, steadfast, bold, unflinching and determined to do the will of His Father, to fulfill His calling, to serve the purpose for which He was sent to earth: to go to Jerusalem and die for the sins of the world. He lived for a purpose; He lived life on purpose, and was purposely driven. He did not let anything get in the way of fulfilling the purpose for which He was sent; because His time on earth was coming to a close, and His mission was almost finished. The Bible says in Isaiah 50:7 (KJV), “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” 

Even from birth, the enemy tried to eliminate Jesus, when all the babies two years old and under were killed by Herod, but His time had not yet come. Much later, a crowd took Jesus to the edge of a cliff to throw Him off and kill him, but His time had not yet come, and Jesus walked right through them. Sometime later, many people picked up stones to stone Him to death, but His time had not yet come. Now, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem, not for the enemy and his cohorts to kill Jesus, but for Jesus to lay His life down willing upon the altar of sacrifice, 'the cross of Calvary.'  

My friend, Jesus was purpose-driven; He had a passion to fulfill what God had called Him to do. Never let anything, or anyone from the enemy’s camp try to stop you from setting your face towards your heavenly Jerusalem. Our purpose on this earth is to spread the gospel, to tell people about Jesus, to make disciples of all nations, to serve the purpose of God in our generation, to set our face towards His will, and do whatever God has called us to do with a, steadfast, bold, unflinching, determination. Therefore, let us make the most of every opportunity to serve Him, to set out resolutely to fulfill our mission, in what He has called us to do.

]]> <![CDATA[Accessible to the Faith-Impaired?]]> http://jimsomerville.wordpress.com/?p=152 Sat, 11 Oct 2008 13:30:59 +0000 Jim Somerville http://jimsomerville.tl.wordpress.com/2008/10/11/accessible-to-the-faith-impaired/ I'm back from Homipalooza 2008 and my head is still hurting.  Not because it was such a wild party (it wasn't), but because of all the big ideas my colleagues and I shared and all the heady discussions we had.  For example: it was my job to look ahead to Easter 2009 and talk about how we might plan our preaching for that season.  I began by saying that while the resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of Christian theology it is also one of those things some people have a hard time believing, people like Doubting Thomas, for instance, who swore that until he put his finger in the holes in Jesus' hands and his hand in his side he would not believe.  In every church I've served there have been at least a few like Thomas who confessed that an Easter faith was hard for them.  They have studied enough science to know that dead bodies don't (usually) come back to life.  They have a hard time quieting the many questions that keep them from believing. 

My colleagues at Homipalooza agreed that the same was true for them.  There were people like that in all their churches.  As good pastors and not only good preachers they wondered how to proclaim the good news of Easter without running roughshod over the honest intellectual struggle of those "doubters." 

I found something in my files that spoke to that concern, and without asking you to read the whole thing let me share the closing paragraph of a sermon delivered three years ago at the First Baptist Church of Washington, DC.  It was about Doubting Thomas, who eventually looked on the risen Christ and believed, and about all those doubters who are still waiting for such a moment.  It was called "Easy for You; Hard for Me":

We’ve worked pretty hard in the last few years to make sure that our building is accessible.  We put in a wheelchair lift over here, automatic doors on the front and back of the building.  We want to be sure that when a disabled person comes to our church it will be easy for him to get into our building and find a place in our pews.  You can see that symbol on some of our doors, the one with the little wheelchair on it, that proudly proclaims: “this church is accessible!”  I wish there were some way to put another symbol on the door, some small icon or image of Thomas, maybe, that would tell the world “This church is accessible to those who have some doubts.”  Because you never know when Jesus is going to show up.  You never know when someone who has been struggling with doubt might look on His face and say, as Thomas did, 

“My Lord and my God!”

We are God's billboard on show for the world to see. In light of this, what kind of advertisement for His Kingdom are we portraying? When people look at us, what do they see? Do they see someone who is faithful to the Lord, who serves the Lord, who has a high standard in regards to Godly living? Do they see someone who is kind, caring, and who is compassionate and approachable? Do they see someone who lives as a Christian, not just in words only, but also in doing good? Someone once said, “You may be the only Bible someone will read.” 

Ruth was out working in the field, and the eyes of the world (eyes of the co-workers) were looking on. For Boaz said her, in Ruth 2:11 (NIV), “I have been told all about what you have done.”  In other words, people are always watching your every move, always looking to see if what you believe in, is real; to see if you are the real deal as a Christian. Our text for today says in 2 Corinthians 3:2 (NIV), “You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody.” Everyone is looking at us, to see if the letter from God to the world, “the billboard,” is advertising Jesus. 

When, as Christians, you make a choice to live for Jesus, the world will look on, and they will comment and even try to mock your walk with the Lord. However, as much as they try, they can never deny a changed life, for the better, in Christ Jesus. Once, we were under different house rules, and in a sense, under the management of the Devil. But when you become a Christian, you are under grace, and your house has a new sign saying, 'Under new management!' 

My friend, each and everyday, the world is looking on, watching our lives as Christians. We are God's letter written on our hearts, to show His life changing power, His power to save to the uttermost. We are under new management, swept clean and shining for Jesus. Let us therefore be a good advert, let our billboard display Jesus to the world, so His light may be seen in us.

We are called to be His witnesses, to tell people about Jesus, to spread the gospel. No matter where, or what part we play, it is God who gives the growth, it is God who gives the increase. The Holy Spirit, through us and by other means, will plant the seed of God's word within someone’s heart. As we tell people about Jesus, faith will arise in their soul, and the Holy Spirit will cause the seed to mature. 

The Bible says in Romans 10:17 (NIV), “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” But how can someone hear the message of the gospel unless someone speaks to them about Jesus Christ, about the cross, and the love God has for them? It can even be saying something as simple as, “God loves you.” 

We may be a planter like the Apostle Paul, who declared the gospel to the unbelievers, the unreached, those who maybe have just heard the gospel for the first time. Then again, we may be an 'Apollos' who waters the seed by telling people about Jesus. Wherever on the scale of knowing Jesus someone may be, we can all have a part to play. But it is God who gives the growth. 

We cannot force someone to come to Jesus; it is a work of grace through the Holy Spirit. All we have to do is be faithful in prayer and spreading the gospel, be faithful in telling people about Jesus, and let God do the rest. 

My friend, each of us has a great opportunity to be part of God's end-time harvest, and the saving of souls. We can all do something to help with the planting and watering of the seed, and then allowing God bring the growth. May we all work together in the Kingdom, planting, watering and being a faithful witness for the gospel. May God grant the increase, may He grant the growth; the end-time harvest of souls.

The word prelude simply means to lead up to something important. Sometimes in a concert, the word prelude is often used as an introductory piece of music that introduces the substance of the message of the piece. It could also mean an event or action that introduces something else, especially something longer and something more important. This morning, we are looking at some events leading up to the resurrection, which we can find in our text in John 19:31-42. There is no greater importance than the resurrection, isn’t true beloved. Paul says “if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins and we are of all men most to be pitied – 1 Corinthians 15:14. So we can see how the resurrection affects the very foundation of our faiths. Take away the resurrection, and we take away the gospel. So let us open that portion of our bibles and we are going to look verse by verse, and see how God can use those prelude events to teach us something about himself. I like to share with you today some words which will become our heading, and all of these words begin with the letter ‘S”. So as we go along verse by verse, you can see those words appearing as a kind of an outline and see how it flows from one event leading to another.

Notice in V31: Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day). Stop here for a moment. The first word with the letter ‘S’ is the word Sabbath. The Jews were very much hung up about the Sabbath, as you know. The Sabbath is very important to the Jews, even today it is a religious day observed on Saturday as a day of worship and rest from work in Israel. Noticed here in v19 that it was the day of the preparation. This Sabbath was no ordinary weekly Sabbath but the text says this was a high Sabbath. In your NIV, it is called special Sabbath. There are some Sabbath which are exceptionally important which are high Sabbath – like the feast of the unleavened bread, the offering of the first fruits, sacrament days, communion days and this particular week was the Passover Sabbath which is high Sabbath. And noticed in v19, it was the day of the preparation. The preparation begins on Wednesday sunset to the Thursday to the Passover Sabbath on Friday; and these priest were supposed to be in the temple for the preparation but instead they were too busy planning and plotting and putting Jesus to death right until Friday morning. So they broke all the laws because killing Jesus was more important. It was unthinkable to violate these laws in exchange for murder and to make matters worse, they violated another old testament law found in Deuteronomy 21:23 – it was forbidden to hang dead bodies on during the high Sabbath. It was Friday the sixth hour when Jesus was crucified – meaning 12 in the afternoon. This was in full view of thousands and thousands of pilgrims who were jamming into Jerusalem for the Passover celebration, and imagine what they see while coming into the holy city on the hills of Golgotha – Jesus the famous teacher hanging with 2 criminals – this is not good. These priests were too busy to realise what had happen. They were priest, supposedly in the temple in the day of preparations on Wednesday till Thursday; and now seen putting Jesus on trial throughout Friday early morning and now putting him on a cross on Friday afternoon, the most holy day. The Sabbath was a system they created for their end, but Jesus whom they view as a trouble causer, and who spoke against their system is too important an agenda to miss out on this occasion and he must be silenced once and for all. No matter what the price or the cause, killing him is justified, and seemed to be doing God a favour. After all, Jesus is a threat to their power and their greed. So it was during a high Sabbath that all this took place.

Notice in V19, also that the Jews sought Pilate to do them another favour. If it is possible, could we quicken their deaths. Now these Jews were no ordinary Jews. They were the Sanhedrin. That is our second word beginning with the word ‘S’. The Sanhedrin is the supreme Jewish judicial, spiritual and administrative council in Jerusalem with 70 members with 1 high priest presiding over them. In our day, you could perhaps view them as the mullah or the ayatollahs who rule the land; or the grand council of the syariah council who decides everything from social life to spiritual life. The Sanhedrin who were the guardians of the temple, the teacher of God’s sacred law and the holy scriptures were so full of hatred and so full of jealousy and so full of resentment towards Jesus Christ that they wanted to break his bones to ensure his death. They were so filled with hatred that they did not know that Jesus was already gone from this world by the time Pilate gave in to their request. Throughout the gospel, these Jewish religious leaders were critical, they were judgmental and quick to condemn. They prayed aloud in public, loved the adoration from men and walks around with their long black robes. In John 8, they dragged a helpless woman to be stoned for adultery, to test Jesus; they excommunicated a man who was healed from blindness and say – how dare you lecture us, you were born in sin. They were judgmental and critical of Jesus’ disciples for not washing their hands during meals, they wanted to kill not only Jesus but Lazarus as well because they were saw the people all going to him, they were so full of hatred, they resorted to bribery in order to get at Jesus. They were all for the kill ever since Jesus began his ministry. And now, they sought Pilate to do what they wanted to do quickly – to break the legs of Jesus. This is to make sure Jesus is dead for sure so that there is no more issue about him coming back to haunt them, after all they heard him say many times that he will return, and secondly to saved their face from the embarrassment of executing a man during a high Sabbath, they need to bring it to an end quickly so that their bodies could be brought down and buried. Breaking legs during crucifixion is a common practice among the Roman soldiers, but to have a special request from the Sanhedrin was something new and abnormal, especially coming from a religious group. Must be shocking for the Roman soldiers to see how cruel and evil, coming from the Sanhedrin themselves. The soldiers would take a giant hammer, smashing the leg, causing them to sink down, unable to push up for air with their legs, they suffocate and die. That is basically what the breaking of legs are for. What an irony, isn’t it? To preserved a holy Sabbath, these men were made to die faster. And so they ordered their legs to be smashed. You know sometimes even today, we try to cover up our spirituality by making others pay a price.

The Sabbath, secondly the Sanhedrin and thirdly we come to the third word with the letter ‘S’ – the soldiers. Look at V 32So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him. When faced with the request of the Sanhedrin, the Roman Governor issued the orders to the soldiers to proceed with this inhuman task. And soldiers are soldiers. They carried out their orders like another one of those duties during crucifixions promptly and efficiently. No human feelings whatsoever, they came to the first criminal, swung hard with precision at their knees breaking one and then the other, as they scream in excruciating pain. Next they came to the other criminal and did the same. Both bodies dropped no longer supported by the legs, and their lungs could no longer expel the air which was inhaled and they struggled breathlessly for air. It is like drowning slowly. The historian Josephus wrote that crucifixion was so common in those days that an estimated 20,000 Jews were crucified during Roman rule. Such was the way people were punished, every day and every week someone would be hanging on a cross. But in John 19, there is one crucifixion that has become to us the most important act of all time.

And that bring us to the next word with the letter ‘S’, and the word is the savior. Look at v33 - but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. The order from the Jews are to quicken the death process. The result of breaking both legs as we saw will make it very fast and quick. When they arrived at the cross of Jesus, there was no more breath in him and so there was no need to break his legs. The soldiers order was to make the process of death quicker, and Jesus was already dead. This was a man from their view point that has captured the region’s attention and so much has been said about this one man. There is only respect because he gripped the nation like no other purely from his life and his teaching. Remember the Centurion in Matthew 27:54 – he has only respect and awe because Jesus was so different in life and so different even in death. Surely he was the son of God – did he believe?, well his words showed he did. This was the saviour whom has come to us all and these soldiers must have been kind of relief that they need not had to break the legs of a man whom they had come to respect, even fear. And so they drew the line at smashing the legs of a dead man, especially this dead man. I guess they were surprised too that he was already dead because death by crucifixion was never over in 6 hours. Jesus died at the ninth hour. 3pm.

Noticed again in V34 - But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

And that is our next word with the letter ‘S’ and the word is the spear. In order to make quite sure that Jesus was really dead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with his spear. The flow of blood and water that followed satisfied the soldiers. There was no doubt he was dead. Isaiah 53 tells us so vividly that he was pierced for our transgression he was crushed for our iniquities. In Psalm 22:16 – the description was said of the Lord - For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18They divide my garments among them And for my clothing they cast lots. Incredible piece of written prophecy word by word about the crucifixion of our Lord. It was a display of word by word accuracy of how the Lord’s bones were protected. Isn’t is so true, beloved that Satan and the forces of evil men combined tried to break the bones of our Lord and try to crush his life away but it is simply this – the Lord Jesus lays down his life himself and gave it up himself. He volunteered to be the sin offering and therefore he lays it down. Remember what he said John 10:17 – For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18"No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. In some sense you could say that it was not the religious leaders that killed him, it was not Pilate who order the execution, it was not the soldiers who carried out the execution, Jesus is simply laying down his life on his accord, and he now has the power to take it up again. No one can force it from him or take it away from him. The spear cannot do more than the crucifixion itself because neither one of those can take his life away. Jesus is the master planner, the initiator, he is here to fulfil the will of his father an when it was time to be lifted up, he laid it down on his own accord. The spear has no power to inflict anything on the son of man.

The next word is the statement. All these were recorded by John himself who wrote it all down personally. Detail by detail he was there from the start to the finish. He gave a statement – which is this – in V 35And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. In the most solemn manner possible, John testifies to the fact that what he has just recorded is the accurate and reliable statement of an eye witness. He was the closest disciple to the Lord Jesus and never left his side till the end. His statement was enough to compel the reader that this was exactly what has happened.

From these statements, we now have the scriptures. That is our next word with the letter “S”. The scriptures. V 36For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN." 37And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED. These words were all fulfilled at Jesus’ death. Every prophecy came to pass when he died. Psalm 34:20 - 20He keeps all his bones, Not one of them is broken, you can also find it in Exodus 12:46 and Numbers 9:12. All these were fulfilled when Jesus died. It is coincidentally during the Passover ; and when the Jews went home to celebrate the Passover of God’s judgment on them during their captivity in Egypt when the angel of death passes by and they were pass over because of the blood of the lamb, Jesus death and his blood is now the Passover lamb, so that God would pass over the people’s sin because of the blood of the lamb of God. What a beautiful picture was the scene in Golgotha, and John who stood there watching the entire scene of salvation being re-enacted before him, understood the lamb of God, the Passover, the fulfilment of scriptures and what he had said all along in his three years of ministry. He began to fit it all together. Every word by word began to sink in..... ! This is scripture in the final stage, and the final picture will be even clearer when John in his last days, banished on the island of Patmos, received the final revelation from God. John say I testify it is true this is my statement because I was there to witness it.The next scene becomes a bit tricky. Whatever feelings of loss felt by the disciples, two secret disciples suddenly became open disciples. They seek to salvage whatever that was left of the situation. Remember they were secret disciples but the two of them were left helpless to turn any decision from the power of the Sanhedrin. V38After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body. 39Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. Another prophecy was about to be fulfilled when Jesus was to be buried in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 53:9). It was Joseph of Arimathaea, an influential member of the Sanhedrin who would have authority and ready access to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Nicodemus, the other secret member of Jesus was reputed to be the third richest man in Jerusalem, also came. You see, Calvary has now made all the difference in both of these men and now they came forward to salvage the battered body of Jesus and lovingly they took him down and wrapped his body gently for burial. Their love was him finally showed in the way they buried him. You could imagine they must have hugged the lifeless body of their dear Lord and cried their eyes out. There must be a great sense of shame and regret that they have no chance to show their affection until now, when he was gone. Nicodemus lavished his wealth on the body of Jesus. They gave him a king’s burial as far as they are concerned. Strips of linen cloth embalm with expensive spices – we were told a hundred pounds of costly mixed spices. Such was their love for their Lord.

Lastly, after they salvage the remains of the battered body of Jesus, they put him in the sepulchre. That is the last word for the day. 40So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

They laid the body of Jesus in the ,sepulchre all wrapped up, as the day of the Sabbath draws near. Jesus died at 3 in the afternoon. By the time they washed and embalmed the body and took him to the new tomb, it would have been evening and sundown. The world went about their business as usual. We can imagine during that time, Pilate went home to supper and make a report to his wife of the days events; Annas and Caiphas presided at their respective Passover feast relief that Jesus was gone finally; the body of Judas was recovered buried and forgotten; John has go home to comfort his new mother, now that he was given the charge from the Lord Jesus from the foot of the cross; the other disciples hid themselves from the public; Herod and his men were playing games in the courtyard; Some of the soldiers were wondering what to do with the pieces of cloth which they took from Jesus and perhaps try to sell it off to petty traders; and the roman soldier who pierced the side of Jesus went home to wash away the blood from his spear.... everybody went about doing their business as usual. Like I say – this is just a prelude. An overture to something greater to come. I trust you have enjoyed these style of teaching. These words will help us understand the prelude events flowing to the resurrection. It was the Sabbath, the Sanhedrin were the evil plotters, the soldiers were the executioners; the saviour laid down his life; the spear could not take his life; the statement came from John who was the witness; the scriptures were fulfilled word by word; the battered body was salvage and finally they laid him inside the sepulcre. By ending here in John 19, it seemed like a dark ending. From the disciples point of view – yes – they went home and all their three years were shattered by this prelude of events. But in three days time, the world will never be the same again and next week, God willing, we will see that glorious event together.

It took us a long time here on by. Pheakkley to find our Featured Flickr Artist of the day, in part because of how contained our thoughts have been on the idea of growing a garden. However, we also wanted to find something that coincided with the flow of growth and the idea of Spring at any time of year. And then, we found our piece.

shante b is a unique Artist that we have recently taken to, in favor of all of the wonderful and perfectly consistent portraits of children that she has done, and because of some shining gems that make her really shine.

We here at Pheakkley love Honest Art. Pieces which are created by real people, because they love what they do and they simply cannot live without expressing what's inside of them. It is obvious that our new friend shante b is exactly one of those types of people.

It was hard to choose a Favorite from her collection, so I suggest you take a look for yourself and decide which one you love!

Before my eyes opened this morning, my heart was awake talking with the Lord. Before a foot was put out of my bed, I started the day in prayer. My heart longs for the Lord, it yearns for Him, to know Him more. From the very start, my day is laid before for the Lord, He is given the first fruits of the day, not the leftovers. I want to hear the gentle whisper of His voice, I want to know His guidance, His leading, His strength and His ways for my life for today. The Bible says in Isaiah 50:4 (NIV), “He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.”  

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, early in the morning my song shall rise to thee. 

The Bible says in Luke 21:38 (NIV), “And all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.” They came early in the morning to hear the words of Jesus. It is better to start the day with Jesus, to spend time in His presence to prepare you for the day ahead, to lay your prayers and daily itinerary, your daily schedule, your daily work pattern, and your daily routine before Him, to ask His blessing and His help, than to rush off and think we can do it all on our own without Him. 

David knew how important it was to give God the first fruits of the day, to worship before Him, and to seek help for what lay head. He understood the value of knowing His faithfulness, and His blessing early in the morning. The Bible says in Psalm 92:1- 2 (NIV), “It is good to praise the Lord and make music to Your name, O Most High, to proclaim Your love in the morning and Your faithfulness at night.” 

Great is Thy faithfulness!  Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

My friend, let us start our day with the Lord in prayer and praise. Let us lay our day before Him, and may He give us His strength to sustain us, and His wisdom on how to deal with things.  May He teach us, help us, and by the Holy Spirit guide us, for His glory.

Setelah melalui berbagai pertimbangan dan penilaian, akhirnya Departemen Pertahanan China memilih Chery untuk memproduksi Chery Easter Limousine sebagai kendaraan khusus bagi para astronot Shenzhou VII.

Menurut keterangan yang diberikan olen Mr. Zeng Hao, wakil presiden Chery, setelah menerima penugasan secara resmi pada tanggal 19 Juni, tim R&D Chery yang dipimpin oleh Mr. Yin Tongyao, Presiden & General Manager Chery, segera membentuk tim khusus yang terdiri dari 6 departemen, antara lain Project Management, R&D, Quality Management, Production, Purchase, dan Trial Production. Lebih dari 100 karyawan Chery turut berpartisipasi dalam tim R&D yang dibentuk. Mereka segera melaksanakan proyek tersebut dan memastikan bahwa proyek berjalan dengan lancar dan tepat waktu.

Untuk kelancaran penyambutan ketiga astronot China, Departemen Pertahanan China memiliki persyaratan khusus untuk penampilan kendaraan limousine terbuka, antara lain ruang kabin yang lapang yang dapat menampung tiga orang penumpang di baris belakang, perfoma kendaraan yang prima meskipun dalam kecepatan yang rendah, tidak timbul getaran pada kecepatan 5-10 km/jam, ketinggian kaca depan yang tepat, dan lain-lain. Untuk memenuhi persyaratan yang diminta dan setelah melakukan analisis menyeluruh, akhirnya Chery memutuskan untuk melakukan pengembang disain, bodi kendaraan, dan perfoma kendaraan Chery Easter 2.4L.

Pertama-tama, untuk meluaskan ruang kabin kendaraan sehingga dapat menampung tiga orang penumpang di baris belakang, masing-masing Chery Easter harus dipanjangkan sebesar 200 mm dari ukuran aslinya. Pemotongan bodi kendaraan dilakukan secara presisi. Kedua, untuk mendapatkan perfoma yang sama setelah proses pemotongan, bagian kendaraan yang penting seperti kerangka mobil, lantai mobil, dan pilar tengah diperkuat. Pada saat yang bersamaan, untuk menghilangkan getaran yang diakibatkan oleh pemanjangan bodi kendaraan, dilakukan penyatuan kembali dengan intensitas yang tinggi untuk setiap bagiannya. Setelah melalui pengetesan, Chery Easter Limousine dinyatakan telah memenuhi standar uji kelayakan.

Tanggal pengiriman mobil dipercepat dari tanggal 20 September menjadi tanggal 10 September. Hanya dibutuhkan waktu rata-rata kurang dari 20 hari untuk masing-masing tahapan produksi, dimulai dari proses disain sampai dengan test jalan kendaraan. Pada tanggal 5 September atau 45 hari setelah men
