I was one of those who "questioned" her good faith because i think and feel that she did not deserve it. The organizers said:

"The untimely demise of her grandfather, among other personal reasons, has caused her undue stress, thus hindering her from fulfilling her duties for the said title... BPCI wishes to express its gratitude to Ms. San Miguel for this act of graciousness and concern for the country. They also wish her well in her future endeavors."

Hmmm.. i wonder what really happened... It seems that she can't take the pressure.. Or maybe there's someone who convinced her to quit.

And so, Danielle Castano, the first runner up, will now be given the opportunity get a glimpse of what it feels to be on top.

I read reports that she was the crowd favorite during the pageant.

Looking young, poised, urbane, and heartbreakingly lovely - Janina San Miguel finally breaks her silence and defends herself against her critics and detractors in a Chika Minute interview.

Correspondent: Puna at batikos - ito ang natanggap ni Binibining Pilipinas World Janina San Miguel dahil sa umano'y sablay nyang Ingles sa Question and Answer portion ng Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant. Tinatawag na rin syang "YouTube Queen" at Junior Melanie Marquez dahil raw sa blooper nya.

Pero nagpapakatatag si Janina. Hindi naman sya galing sa marangyang pamilya. May pampasadang jeep ang kanyang ama. Panganay sa tatlong magkakapatid. Ang kanyang pamilya raw ang dahilan kaya sya nagpursigi na sumali sa Binibining Pilipinas.

Janina (insert) - Napakasimple lang po talaga ng pamilya namin, pero lahat po kami nagmamahalan. So yun po. Kumpleto naman po kami.

Correspondent - Matibay pa rin si Janina, kung tutuusin. Natatanggap nya sa kanyang kalooban ang mga panlalait, pagpapakita lang na maganda ang disposisyon nya sa buhay.

Correspondent - Tuloy ang usad ng buhay para kay Janina. Nagpapasalamat din sya sa suporta ng Bb. Pilipinas at ng mga kasamahang reigning queens. Inamin naman nyang ninerbyos sya noong pageant night, at hindi raw nya masyadong narinig ang tanong sa kanya. Pero kung ngayon sya tatanungin kung ano ang naging papel ng pamilya nya sa pagsali nya sa Bb. Pilipinas, ganito nya raw sasagutin:

Janina (insert) - Well, they serve as my inspiration. Talagang yun po talaga.

Correspondent - At para raw sa walang tigil sa pangungutya, ito na lang ang masasabi ni Janina:

Janina (insert) - Nakita nyo naman po, na meron akong sapat na lakas na loob na lumaban. Sana po, nangyari na, huwag na lang po kayong manghusga ng tao. Talaga pong gagawin ko yung makakaya ko para sa competition na 'to sa darating na Ms. World.

My Commentary:

IMHO, this is GMA-7 network's attempt to make people regard Janina with more sympathy and compassion than they have done so far. The following were the points raised by the Chika Minute report and my translation - what was actually being said between the lines:

• Janina does not come from a wealthy family (translation = she did not have the privileges that would have turned her into a better English speaker; therefore, you can't blame her for her blunder. Moreover, she's "one of us" - that is, she's not part of the wealthy minority - and we should stop picking on our own kind)
• that Janina does not mind the criticisms (translation = that Janina is gracious and forgiving - a much kinder soul than her detractors who are obviously mean-hearted as they persist in criticizing her)
• that Janina is only 17 (translation = she's young so people should be more forgiving and understanding )
• that Janina admits to being nervous (translation = she messed up but she is at least honest for she admits it; doesn't that count for something?)
• that Janina did not hear the question clearly (translation = you can't blame her for her answer which was wide of the mark; if she couldn't hear the question clearly, then how could we expect her to answer it correctly?)
• that Janina would have given the correct answer had she been less nervous and had she understood the question better (translation = no, she's not stupid like some people are saying)
• that she has the courage to go on and fight and people should stop judging her (translation = people, stop talking about her, ano ba?!? You're judgmental if you do, and do you really want to be labeled as such?)
• that Janina is determined to do better in the Ms. World beauty pageant (this is a straightforward statement; reading between the lines is not required)

This report is a brilliant piece of marketing. It paints a picture of a young, lovely, kind, family-loving, and vulnerable person who is but a victim of cruel, senseless and judgmental people who enjoy picking on her. Pilipinong Pilipino ang plot. Janina is portrayed as the underdog (the "api" character) and her detractors - those who continue to complain about the judges' decision - are simply mean and judgmental people (the "villains") who just love to pick on Janina.

Guess who comes out smelling like roses and who comes out smelling like shit in the end?

Ironically, the report still leaves the crucial question unanswered: Does Janina deserve to win the Bb. Pilipinas World title?

We must understand that the outpouring of indignation after the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant is not a result of Janina's bad English. It is a protest against a system where a candidate who did very poorly in the Q&A portion can still bag a major title.

A candidate can slip and fall off the stage and we'll still accept her if she wins the title. We'll laugh at her and we'll talk about her, of course, but we will not question the judges' decision as long as she has been able to prove her mettle in the competition. However, a candidate can't crash and burn during the Question and Answer portion and expect people not to complain and ask questions if she wins a major title.

Janina can and does have our sympathy, but she still does not deserve the crown and the judges still have to explain their decision. That's the issue, in a nutshell.

It has come to my attention that there now is a very unexpected person making the headlines in the entertainment (or lifestyle, whatever) section of the news (she's now in Wikipedia and YouTube). No one really remembered the other two winners, but her name will most likely go down in history. Yup, you guessed it - Bb Pilipinas - World grand finalist, our very own Janina San Miguel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think she is the very example of beauty without any brains. As cruel as I may sound, any normal self-respecting individual could see some truth to what I say. Here's the recount of the nosebleed moment from our Miss World contestant:

I would rather send Inday (from the ever-popular, conio-than-I Inday jokes circulating around the net) to the pageant. Manny Pacquiao could even do better, granted that he'd already spent years in US and he still doesn't speak as fluently. I'm really not sure if everything Ms San Miguel said was intentional, but please, if she wants popularity, don't do it in a major pageant. Other stars have made it big just by making lots of boo-boos on TV - like Melanie Marquez's "don't judge me, I am not a book" quote. She's is representing the country, for goodness' sake, the stupid girl. Her quips may be entertaining, quite hilarious in a way, but if she's onstage with all other foreign pageant contestants, it's shameful. Admittedly, she is pretty, but unless you are a really superficial idiot, she isn't acceptable if she doesn't have brains to reinforce her beauty. I would rather prefer having someone with less stellar looks but gives an answer worth a standing ovation. So far, I haven't heard any instance where the audience gives a standing ovation just by seeing someone who looks really good in evening gowns.

I don't know what will happen during Miss World, but I hope she surprises us by making up for every humiliation she has brought upon herself and upon this country. I still have some hope in her.

And if she wins the Miss World title by being a pretty little dolt, well, I have to confirm that life is one big joke, and that pageants are just big gag shows.

So here's my 2 cents that you've been waiting for. Stop yammering that Filipino should be given more importance in the country. Stop yammering that English is declining and we should do something about it. Stop yammering that beauty and brains should go together.
Just stop, and enjoy these blunders, hoping that they'd stop doing them in the future.

PS I do wonder if it's possible to raise one's ability to answer intelligently. If it's not possible, then I do hope that Janina doesn't get to be in the tof 10 during the Ms. World contest proper. She already shamed herself during the local contest. May she not shame her country during the international contest.

I think beauty contests here in our country is back in a stunning way with the eventual Ms. World Janina San Miguel.

The girl is 17 years old. A first timer in a beauty pageant makes it difficult and more changelling for her.

After giving a not so impressive answer to a simple question, the audience, and the viewers were in state of shock.

And yet, she went home and had the last laugh. She will vying for the Ms. World.

Janina is entirely different to last year's Bb. Pilipinas World Maggie Wilson, needless to say.

Maggie was so confident then but went home with nothing.

As of this moment, I am still thinking if she (Janina) can win or at least have a serious shot at the Miss World.

Let's hope she can.

Well, it's simple. Janina answered my question.

For those of you who are too lazy or too impatient to watch the video, here's my detailed transcript and commentary on this enormously notable event. The Host was Paolo Bediones.

Host: Janina, how are you?

Janina: I'm fine.

Host: All right...

Janina: Yes

[directs a sickeningly sweet and plastic beauty queen smile to the audience]

Host: (cont)... so you won two of the major awards - Best in Long Gown and Best in Swimsuit...

Janina: [smiles her beauty queen smile; tries to look humbly complacent but succeeds only in looking rather constipated] Yes [She seems exceedingly fond of the word Yes, huh?]

[Nah, that's not a misspelling; that's exactly what she said though she probably meant "feel." And if you want to know how she recited this statement, read it the way you have been taught to read poems when you were in elementary school: put the stress on every other word. That is to say, emphasize the following: No, fill, pressure - you get the gist? Don't forget to over-enunciate, too. That's a definite requirement. Oh, and smile the sickly smile afterwards]

Host: Confident! All right! Please choose the name of a judge!

[At this point, Janina again bestows the world with her beauty queen smile then inclines her head regally (?) towards the audience. When asked to pick a name from the lot of judges, she pouts prettily then pastes on - there really is no other term for it - her smile once again]

Host: We have Ms. Vivian Tan.

Ms. Tan: Good evening.

Janina: Good evening!

Ms. Tan: The question is: What role did your family play with you as candidate to Binibining Pilipinas?

Janina: Well, my family's role for me is so important. Because there was the... they're... they was the one [you should see the look on ms. Tan's face: it has a petrified quality to it and there's a telling flicker of the left eyelid - it seems she can't believe what she's hearing and seeing] who...se [crowd roars] very Ha Ha, Oh, I'm so sorry. My pamily, my family, Oh my God [Ms. Tan finally yet good naturedly chuckles; crowd roars] I'm, [Paolo Bediones: That's Ok] Ok, I'm so sorry, I, I told you that I'm so confident, eto, ahm, wait, aha ha ha ha ha ha [her laughter is a bit hysterical; the crowd roars once again]. Ahm, Sorry guys [the camera pans to the other contestants on stage; the ladies were obviously but unsuccessfully trying to suppress their mirth; they were giggling a shade too bitchily, perhaps, but who can blame them for being glad, huh? After all, they're in a contest with Ms. San Miguel] because this was really my first pageant ever. Because I'm only 17 years old [camera pans to the judges' table; it shows Ms Tan still widely smiling but the petrified quality to her smile is back. obviously she's still incredulous ; the judge seated beside Ms. Tan is openly laughing at this point] and Uh ha ha I, I did not expect that I came from, I came from one of the TAFF 10 [she meant that she can't believe she made it to the TOP 10], hmm [the hmm sound she made as if to convince herself and the crowd; really; listen to it and you'll agree], so, but I said DOT [DOT = that; Ms. Tan and the judge seated beside her are still smiling but their smiles indicate that they don't find it funny anymore; the guy judge's eyes are downcast while Ms. Tan's is fixed on Ms. San Miguel; it seems they have now started to accept the fact that they have in front of them a contestant who "came apart at the seams" in an incredibly grand way during the Q&A portion] my family is the most important persons in my life, thank you.

So before I started laughing again, allow me to congratulate my fellow Thomasian, Ms. Jennifer Barrientos for winning the 2008 Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown. Go Girl! You made your entire UST family SOOOO PROUD!

Going back, I was one of the many who always watch this annual event at my house. I wanna know who will be the ones who will represent the country for the biggest pageants in the globe. Other than that, I also want to treat myself with some laughter after a day's hard work -- watch out for the funny scenes if there will be any.

Luckily, the pageant didn't disappoint me. Candidate No. 15 was able to make my tummy ache in laughter.

Grabe talaga ito! At nanalo pa siya! Whahahahahaha... :D

Well, it's bad to laugh at the mistakes of others but I just can't really help myself. I'm so sorry... (*giggles*) I'm not being mean, you know. Maldita lang talaga ako. And I just can't help but visualize how it's going to be like in the Miss World 2008 Beauty Pageant.

Wait, I got a suggestion. Since Ms. Janina San Miguel is really pretty and deserving of bringing home the Miss Long Gown and Miss Swimsuit in the Bb. Pilipinas 2008, why don't we just let her do all the modeling stuff and... How about if she just speak in Filipino and bring an interpreter with her to translate her answer? That way, it won't be a bigger mess in front of the whole world. ;)

Even English textbooks used by some schoolchildren are not free of grammatical flaws. In composition classes, you'll read many disastrous essays. I remember how a student of Expository Writing course who almost give up because of "poor English". She majored English. A year ago, I heard that she passed the LET. I am confident her self tag "poor English" has improved a lot.

I was surprised when I read about the "disastrous answer" of Bb. Pilipinas candidate No. 15, Janina San Miguel. Least expected, she was crowned as Bb. Pilipinas-World.
